Whitewater rafting near Lexington?

We%26#39;ll be traveling through Lexington in about 2 weeks on a trip from St. Louis to Washington, D.C. and are looking for a place to do some whitewater rafting. We have never done this before so probably class III would be fine. We would prefer to go on a tour that isn%26#39;t any longer than half a day, and where we wouldn%26#39;t end up on basically just a float trip - where we%26#39;d MOSTLY have to paddle just to move along on very calm, flat water. We%26#39;d prefer not to have to drive more than an hour from Lexington.

Can anyone recommend a tour company in a location that would work for us? Any info. would be appreciated!

You can kayak and canoe in the Red River Gorge, which is about 45 miles east of Lexington on the Mountain Parkway. While I have spent a lot of time in the Gorge, I%26#39;ve not actually rafted. I do not believe there are any organized tours, but kayak and canoe rentals are available. I do not believe that there are big rapids, but there is white water and the river does flow briskly in most places. It is stunningly beautiful area. I believe the closest place with ';big boy'; white water rafting is at Breaks Interstate Park, on the Kentucky/Virginia border.

The Gorge section of the Elkhorn Creek (from the Forks to Knight%26#39;s Bridge) would work for you if the water levels are right; livery is Canoe Kentucky; info on the web; also lower Cumberland raft trips?

Have fun, and report back afterwards.

otterhere, the Elkhorn is one of the ones that sounds VERY familiar. I think I had seen a website about that one - lower and upper? Anyway, all the areas sound beautiful. Here in Mo. we have the Ozark Nat%26#39;l. Scenic Riverways (Current and other great float rivers that can flow pretty rapidly at times, but are very scenic as well.) Thanks for the info!

Your best bet would be the Elkhorn creek. The portion that the outfitter www.canoeky.com refers to as the whitewater hairraiser is a class I-III and is very scenic. I am a very experienced whitewater boater and I enjoy the river a lot.
