Wife and I are staying downtown at the Galt House Sat-Mon in mid March.Booked thru Hotwire for $69 a night. Hoping some of the negative reviews on here are overstated!. Anyway, we are thinking of driving in on Friday night to cut down on Saturday%26#39;s drive time and allow more time to explore Louisville.
Are there any reasonable/clean/safe-area motels maybe 30-60 minutes west of Louisville? We wouldn%26#39;t be arriving until 9 or 10, so just looking for a place to sleep...no meals or nightlife.
Thanks,
bluesguy

Hmm...I posted and it disappeared!
Galt House...the renovations took time, so some people did not get a finished room. Other than that, the place is fine, has a great location and is on the trolley line which takes you all over town for 50 cents.
My husband treks to Evansville weekly. He suggested that you stay at the Dale, IN exit #57. There is a new Motel 6 there as well as a Baymont Suites and a Denny%26#39;s for breakfast. It%26#39;s about an hour away from Louisville.
ps..If you like blues, we have Stevie Ray%26#39;s Blues club on Main Street and the Jazz Factory for blues/jazz. All blissfully smokefree here as well!

At that price, why not just drive all the way here and get set up? BTW, I%26#39;ve been in a few of the rooms at the Galt House and they were all redone nicely...
Linda and Derby,
Thanks for the ideas.
Linda I also have your ';go list';. It has been very helpful as I have been planning the trip.
My moniker, bluesguy, refers to two of my passions. I do love blues music and also STL Blues Hockey!
I will definitely check out the blues club when I am in town. Anything special going on for St. Paddy%26#39;s Day?
Louisville is a great place on St Patrick%26#39;s Day. I%26#39;d recommend a visit to the Irish Rover--authentic Irish pub owned by Kerryman Michael Reidy. It;s on Frankfort Avenue. The overflow crowd is accommodated in a large tent erected in the parking lot. There will be a couple of excellent Irish bands and the kids from the local Irsh dance school will perform in the afternoon. The Rover has the best Fish %26amp; Chips in Louisville if not the US.
The Rover sounds great! Is it near downtown? If not, how far from downtown?
Thanks,
bluesguy
The Rover is about five miles from the center of downtown.
Most of the chain hotels are just fine and standard, if you don%26#39;t want to drive in all the way. I%26#39;m not sure where you are coming from, but there is a Hampton Inn in Frankfort, which is midway between Louisville and Lexington. There%26#39;s some chain restaurants right around the hotel and its right off the interstate. I recommend the Johnny Carinos for Italian, but don%26#39;t know if they are still open.
Failing that, about 30 minutes on is the outskirts of Louisville and Hurstbourne Lane has several basic chain hotels and several restaurants.
The Irish Rover is in the Highlands, its a really neat area. Be warned though that Bardstown Road is strange to drive on and parking can be very tight. Be prepared to parallel park. I also recommend Lynn%26#39;s Paradise Cafe on Baret Avenue. Very popular, fabulous food, and has its own parking lot.
he Irish Rover is on Frankfort Ave...not Bardstown Rd
