Suggestions for an Important Family Birthday Trip

My mother was born in Kentucky, and we are thinking of how to celebrate. Would you suggest places for a family celebration (3-5 days)that would be comfortable (bordering luxury) for senior citizens and still interesting for children? Thank you.

I forgot - this would be for winter 2009.

I think you%26#39;ll need to focus on Louisville, Lexington or the Northern Kentucky area just outside of Cincinnati if you%26#39;re looking for really high end accomodations.

Any of these areas would also offer various museums and attractions for children. The Boone Tavern Hotel in Berea, KY (30 miles SE of Lexington)comes to mind, but it%26#39;s a small town so you%26#39;ll have fewer entertainment options. It does have a really active arts %26amp; crafts scene.

A few questions....

-In what area of KY was your mother born? Are you going to try to visit there as part of the trip? That might impact where you want to stay.

-How old are the children? What types of interests do they have?

-How important is dining/nightlife/entertainment?

Thank you for your help - she was born in Elizabethtown. Our goal is to relax and have fun, but we don%26#39;t want to camp or skimp on comfort (but that does not mean extravagant). Nightlife is not important, food is important, the kids would be happy at historic or nature sites as long as there is an indoor swimming pool.

I%26#39;d recommend a stay in Louisville which is only about 40 miles from E%26#39;town via I-65. One highly, highly recommended activity would be to visit Mammoth Cave, 100 miles south of Louisville. It is regarded as one of the seven natural wonders of the world and there is a wide variety of ranger guided tours for all levels of physical fitness. It is a fascinating place to tour. Louisville itself has some great museums: Speed Art Museum (';Speed'; is thh family name of the major donor-it has nothing to do with auto racing) is excellent, Frazier History Museum, Ky Derby museum, Louisville Slugger Museum. Louisville is also a very good restaurant town and is known for professional theatre as well.

Louisvillian has given you some excellent advice. Also, please look at the golists for Louisville. Food is great here. Not luxury, but a great swimming pool at the Holiday Inn on Fern Valley Road; plus kids eat breakfast free. However, by 2009 the old Executive west will be a Crowne Plaza and will probably have a great pool too. I think the entire family would enjoy the Hyatt or galt house downtown. I suggest you try Groople for booking a block of rooms. We have used them several times for our company and they give us the best group rate.

Thank you all very much. And I have never heard of Groople - I will look it up and check it out. Thank you again!

Hi! So glad you are coming! You might want to consider going to Abraham Lincoln%26#39;s birthplace when you are here. It%26#39;s less than an hour from Louisville, and with the 200th anniversary of his birth next year, there are a lot of things going on to celebrate it.

As far as historical sites in the area, you might try Locust Grove www.locustgrove.org, Farmington (Lincoln was good friends with one of the owners, Joshua Speed also known from the Speed Museum), and the Farnsley-Moremen Home.

I%26#39;d like to also recommend the Falls of the Ohio Museum across the river in Clarksville, Indiana. Very cool museum about the fossil beds and the ancient history there.

A fun place to eat is Doe-Run Inn, near Radcliff/Vine Grove. Lincoln%26#39;s father was involved there somehow, but I don%26#39;t remember exactly.

If you are up for a day trip when you are here, go to Bardstown. My Old Kentucky Home is there as well as a Civil War museum and several other interesting places. It%26#39;s about 45 minutes south on I-65.

Lots to do here!

The kids will get a kick out of Lynn%26#39;s Paradise Cafe. And for the adults, the food is very good. Just got back from lunch there.
