Disclaimer: Mint Juleps

Just thought I would mention to any of you out there who may be attending your first Derby and thus sipping your first mint julep:

That is not how we normally drink our bourbon around here.

That is one of those media, marketing and tourist industry driven concoctions that has taken on a romantic persona of its own. It%26#39;s truly an abomination of our state beverage.

However, you still MUST have one! It would be like going to Hawaii and not attending a luau. You can%26#39;t go to the Derby and not have a mint julep.

Just remember, the other 364 days of the year you won%26#39;t find anybody drinking them around here.

Cheers.

You said it Okae! I usually have a few Mint Juleps on Derby Day simply because there are guys walking around selling them in the crowd. No long drink lines. That said, they are some of the worst Mint Juleps I have ever had.

To make a good Mint Julep, you have to make the simple syrup (cook sugar %26amp; water together until it becomes a syrup). I don%26#39;t know if they are skipping that step or just doing it badly. Not a big fan of Early Times either. They changed it several years ago %26amp; it just isn%26#39;t as good anymore IMHO.

A real Julep that%26#39;s been made at home, with Old Forrester, by someone who knows what they are doing isn%26#39;t bad. However, I prefer my Old Forrester with plain water over ice, short. Hold the mint.

So true Okae. If you like to swallow your Scope instead of spitting you%26#39;ll love it. Otherwise, have a beer!
