My friend and I will be driving from Memphis to Southern Indiana in early June and are looking for a fun, overnight stop somewhere around the midpoint that will be either an interesting place to see or just a nice town to stop over in.
We have been the Caves twice already, so we%26#39;re looking for something different time.
Thanks!!
Road Trip Memphis to Indiana - Kentucky Ideas?
wenzhi,
I think it depends upon which part of Southern Indiana you%26#39;re heading to. If you%26#39;re heading toward some place just north of Louisville, KY, then the best stop over point would be Nashville, TN. It%26#39;s about the halfway mark between Memphis %26amp; Louisville. By the way, did you know that the Memphis to Louisville trip only takes 5 hours?
Road Trip Memphis to Indiana - Kentucky Ideas?
Thanks for the reply!
We%26#39;re heading to Bloomington, IN if that helps. Last time we did it I think it was about an 8 - 9 hour trip (via Nashville, the Caves - where we stopped -, and then up through St. Lewis. But we%26#39;re not tied to that route if anyone has suggestions for something else fun.
I know the drive is definitely doable in one long day, but we want to make a stopover just to make it into a fun trip.
Thanks!
Memphis to Bloomington....I would imagine you%26#39;d want to take i 55 to I 57.....
Wow! I%26#39;m sitting here looking at my atlas and I%26#39;m sorry to have to report that you ';can%26#39;t get there from here';. In all seriousness, it looks like your most direct route (while keeping to larger roads) would be something like this....
Memphis to Mayfield, KY. Then to north of Evansville, IN to catch I-64. Then catch 37 north to Bloomington. You%26#39;ll pass by The Land Between the Lakes area. I%26#39;m just not that familiar with that area, but I understand it%26#39;s really scenic with parks/boating/camping etc.
If you%26#39;re looking for a little more nightlife type action, the route above would take you within about 40 miles of Louisville. It wouldn%26#39;t be that far out of the way to stop here overnight. (Of course I%26#39;m partial) Louisville to Bloomington is about 2 hours.
Otherwise, you could go Memphis to Nashville (2.5 hrs). Overnight in Nashville then up I-65 to Columbus, IN and cut over to Bloomington (4.5 hours).
If you follow Seagrover%26#39;s route, there%26#39;s LOTS of fun things to do in Land Between the Lakes. Check out www.lbl.org There%26#39;s Homeplace 1850, Elk and Bison Prairie, planetarium, etc. Try to get reservations at one of the adjoining state park lodges - Lake Barkley SRP, Kenlake SRP, or Kentucky Dam Village. They all have very nice accomodations. If you%26#39;re in the area on a Saturday, be sure to check out the Farmer%26#39;s market and antique shops in Cadiz
When I drove Louisville-Nashville-Memphis in September 06 it took two hours longer than expected due to traffic congestion and construction. Be sure and check for construction updates. It was an awful driving trip and no telling what the gas would cost repeating that journey now.
Re: traffic congestion--it%26#39;s possible to drive Memphis to Louisville and avoid Nashville. As you reach Jackson , TN you can head north on any number of smaller numbered hoghways and then hook up with the WK Parkway. If you time things properly you could have the treat of stopping for barbecue at the famous Bozo%26#39;s in Milan, TN. Nashville is always under construction.....
