Seeking Shaker Village help

I know this is the Lexington forum, however I%26#39;ve already checked out Harrodsburg and Bardstown forums and couldn%26#39;t find my answers. I knew the friendly people of Lexingon would help me out...

1. Is Shaker Village and appropriate place to take toddlers? Anyone familiar with the Old Ministry House or the Tanyard House? We think we%26#39;d really like to go there but the web page is a little slow to navigate and for the life of me I could not find pictures of the individual building.

2. How far is it from Lexington? (drive time)j Is it reasonable to go to Harrodsburg, drive to Lexington for lodging and then drive back to Harrodsburg?

3. Finally, if we are in Harrisburg do we head back to Indianapolis through Louisville or Lexington? We%26#39;ll be coming from Knoxville area.

Thanks so much for any direction you can point me.

Depending on which side of Lexington you start from it can take anywhere from 20-40 minutes. It is a beautiful drive. You just take Harrodsburg Rd from Lexington and follow it to Shakertown. However, be aware that it does become a 2 lane country road that winds down by the Ky River and back up the hill.

If you stay around Beaumont Center you will have an easy drive to Harrodsburg (more in the 20 minute range).

I%26#39;ve stayed in one of the buildings before but not with my child. The rooms are spare but nice. They have Tempurpedic mattresses so they are very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and they have some animals. The food is good too. I think if your child likes walking around and petting farm animals they will be fine.

There is also a boat trip across the road that your child might enjoy.

Sorry but I%26#39;m not sure how you would go back:(

Great information---Thanks so much Lexingtongal!

I will check out the Beaumont Center area. My kids are pretty easily pleased at this age. They love just being outside so I think they will enjoy it, just wasn%26#39;t sure how common it was for little ones to go. The boat sounds great too. We don%26#39;t mind the curves and the drive. Just have to remember to watch the road and not the beautiful scenery! If we make it down I will make sure to post a report.

Thanks again.

When you leave Harrodsburg, you should take US 127 towards Frankfort where it will run into I64 and then you would continue on to Louisville then Indy. There is no reason to come back to Lexington first unless you need to stop in town for something. It will take you more time to do that. If you just need to get back to Indy, take US 127. I think it is 4 lanes most of the way if not all and moves pretty quickly.

One more piece of the puzzle. I think I%26#39;m all set. Thanks georgeglass...wait a minute...you really DO exist? Poor Jan!

Don%26#39;t know if I am too late with this post, but I have a four-year old and take her to shaker village all the time (along with her baby sister.) They welcome kids there and it is great because the grounds are expansive, great place to play and great food! The only warning is that inside the buildings it can be VERY quiet. So depending on the nature of the child and your level of comfort with being the loudest in the room, there may be lots of shushing. :) But otherwise, don%26#39;t miss Shaker Village- I have never been anywhere like it! And as previous posters said, it is an easy drive from Lexington.

Also, if you are spending the day at Shaker Village and have time for dessert (or of you need a little drive at naptime) to go to Harrodsburg and go to the old-fashioned soda fountain in downtown Harrodsburg, awesome shakes and fudge- a toddlers dream! And great sandwiches! I wish I could remember the name, I think it has Chocolate or Fudge in the name, but Harrodsburg is not that big and it is on one of the main downtown streets. If you are thinking about spending a night or two in Harrodsburg, Beaumont Inn is a great place to stay. (Shaker Village has rooms as well!) Have fun!
