Any feedback? I%26#39;ve relatives flying down who are really interested in seeing this; as I recall from a visit long ago, it%26#39;s basically just a ';simulated'; cabin (not the original structure) inside a concrete building. Is it worth a six-hour total drive???
Lincoln Birthplace
I%26#39;m a big history buff and when we came to Kentucky a couple of years ago I had to see it. While you are in the area why not also visit the Shaker Village. We did both in one day.
Lincoln Birthplace
I grew up right next to the Birthplace and used to spend quite a bit of time there as a child. The cabin is just as you said - but still kind of neat to see. There is also a visitor center that has some neat displays. Kids seem to get a kick out of seeing the stump of the huge old oak tree and visiting the spring. There are some nice trails to take and right across Lincoln Farm Rd there is a very nice park for picnics and such. Up in town (about 3 miles) there is a Lincoln Mueseum. About 10 miles away (on the way to Bardstown) is Lincoln%26#39;s Boyhood home. This is somewhat smaller than the birthplace (not quite as much to see) but the rangers take you around and tell you about what a farm would have been like when Lincoln lived there. Now, I know that the city of Hodgenville has spent ungodly amounts of money getting the Birthplace and the town ready for the Centennial celebration, but in all honesty I would not drive 6 hours just to see it. However, if you combined your trip with some other area attractions it would be worth it. Further south is Mammoth Cave, Kentucky Down Under and Guntown Mountain. Going back towards Louisville, there is the city of Bardstown. This is a really neat little town where you can check out little shops and visit My Old Kentucky Home and maybe go for a dinner train ride on the My Old Kentucky Home Dinner Train. I would not recommend combining a trip to Lincoln%26#39;s Birthplace with one to Shaker town. They are not really in the same proximity and when we visited Shakertown a couple months ago, we found more than enough to keep us busy there for the whole day.
