what to do around Williamsburg, KY area

My family (parents %26amp; kids aged 7 %26amp; 9 yrs) will be visiting in the Williamsburg, KY area in mid-July. At the moment, our main focus has been to experience Tenessee in the Gatlinburg area. However, since we%26#39;ll be up in Williamsburg, before we drive down, are there places in Kentucky and the surrounding areas that we should see before we drive down to Gatlinburg or on our way down? We love things that have to do with nature, wildlife, culture... What would be the best route to take? We have six full days. We don%26#39;t need to go into Knoxville, as we%26#39;ll have a morning there already, prior to our visit to Williamsburg. We welcome all ideas and suggestions as I%26#39;m quite clueless as to what%26#39;s in the area. Thanks in advance!

You might spend a day or so checking out Cumberland Falls State Park. It takes about 20 minutes to get there from Williamsburg. It could easily be a day trip or you could spend the night.

If possible, try to plan your visit during the full moon, so you%26#39;ll have a chance to see the Moonbow. The weather conditions have to be just right in order for it to occur. Dates for 2008 are shown on the link below.

For lodging at the park, there%26#39;s the DuPont Lodge or you can rent a cottage. There%26#39;s a formal restaurant at the the Lodge and a snack bar or two. I%26#39;d suggest taking a cooler %26amp; picnic supplies.

Be advised that this area is dry (No package alcohol sales) If you want beer/wine etc., you%26#39;ll need to bring it with you. The closest purchase point is in Jellico, Tennessee just south of Williamsburg on I-75. You%26#39;ll drive right by on your trip up I-75 from Knoxville.

There are about 12 hiking trails. There%26#39;s also horseback riding, a public swimming pool (where I spent plenty of time as a teenager) and there used to be a whitewater rafting service. The website indicates it%26#39;s still available.

About 15 miles down the Falls Highway back toward Corbin, is The Grove Marina on Laurel Lake. You could also rent a boat for the day or a couple of days. http://www.corbinkentucky.us/grovemarina.htm

Your best/fastest route to Gatlinburg would be I-75 South to I-40 East. You aren%26#39;t actually on I-40 that long. Maybe 20 miles. Then you exit South toward Sevierville/Dollywood/Gatlinburg. I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s well marked. I haven%26#39;t driven it in 10 years.
