Ryder Cup Sept 2008

Having received my tickets for the Ryder Cup I notice that the only shuttles to the course are coming out of Louisville. I am staying in Frankfort to the east of Valhalla does anyone have any suggestions on how best to avoid the drive into Louisville, is one able to park on the east side of the golf course? Does anyone fancy allowing me to park my car at their home close by for a fee?

Would appreciate any help available.

Looking forward to a great weekend.

Ryder Cup Sept 2008

Be careful....there are a few homes and businesses near Valhalla that are offering parking for $30-50 per day. You will be walking since Valhalla is not close to much. As well there are concerns that no walkers will be allowed in the gates---they are trying to control crowds via busing people from Freedom Hall

Ryder Cup Sept 2008

I have attended two PGA Championships at Valhalla, and I have little reason to doubt that the parking arrangements for the Ryder Cup will be any different. All you will need to do is take I-64 west from Frankfort towards Louisville. As you approach Louisville, take I-264 north. From there signs will prompt with regard to where to park. You will be funneled into one of several giant fields. After you park, look for the bus pickup station. You will get on large motorcoach buses that will take you to the front gate of Valhalla and let you off. When you leave, reverse the procedure.

This is ';official'; parking. I have found it to be very smooth and efficient. I would stay away from trying to find your own parking in unofficial places. You may be gouged. Streets will be closed, and you will have a long walk.

You may want to double check this on the Cup web site. I%26#39;m sure it has directions and parking instructions.

First off it it is 265 Gene Snyder not 264 to get to Valhalla. Second, there is NO FIELD PARKING FOR THE RYDER CUP. The PGA in 2000 used fields on Old Henry Road WHICH ARE NOT BEING USED FOR THE RYDER CUP...these lots are RESERVED FOR VOLUNTEERS and the general public will be TURNED AWAY.

General parking is available for free at the Exposition Center at the Fairgrounds by the Louisville airport. Tale 64 west to 264 west and follow the signs.

I agree, dtr. You%26#39;ll be better off if you just use the recommended shuttles from Louisville

This morning%26#39;s Courier Journal included the following information on travelling to Valhalla.

';Authorities strongly encourage spectators to take free shuttles from the Kentucky Exposition Center near Louisville International Airport and the Kentucky International Convention Center downtown. The shuttles begin running at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday and continue through Sunday.

';Don%26#39;t think that you%26#39;re going to park in somebody%26#39;s yard and walk in, because that%26#39;s not going to occur,'; said Louisville Metro Police Capt. Jeff Sherrard.

Or, maybe it will.

Ryder Cup officials may permit fans to use the vendors%26#39; gate, tournament director Tara Guenthner said. But they shouldn%26#39;t count on it. If safety along Shelbyville Road becomes a concern, tournament organizers said they%26#39;ll close the gate and bring vendors in on buses.

If the gate is closed, fans will have to turn around and drive about 20 miles to one of two shuttle boarding locations.

Organizers say about 100 buses, vans and other vehicles will carry 23,000 people a day during the six-day event, which culminates with matches between U.S. and European golfers. The bus trips to Valhalla in eastern Jefferson County are expected to take about 30 minutes.

Free parking will be available at the Exposition Center, also known as the state fairgrounds. All gates will be open except for Gate 3 off Crittenden Drive, Sherrard said.';

I love the part from the Courier Journal that says ';or maybe they will';. Don%26#39;t you just love indecision? My husband is a marshall and he has very clear instructions about where to go and park and if anyone thinks he can get around the rules, he may be surprised. I do hope the editors remove the ad from the poster above. I would be very careful about which shuttle services and cabs to use as they simply will not allow them access to the entry.

I was watching the local news a couple of hours ago and they are now saying that they won%26#39;t allow any walk-up%26#39;s.

OK. I get it that they are trying to control traffic around a largely residential area. However, does it not strike anyone else as odd that that they couldn%26#39;t set up some parking within a few miles of the venue? Twenty five or thirty miles away seems slightly unreasonable.

Does anyone know why they didn%26#39;t make a deal with someplace that has a large parkig lot like Southeast Christian or Sam%26#39;s Club? Or someone with an undeveloped large field (as was done for the PGA)?

Just curious.

In this time of gas prices ad nauseum it seems like there would be a few places strategically placed for commuters. For instance, some people are actually within walking distance to the club. So they have to DRIVE out to Freedom Hall, park and take a shuttle? Nonsense! They could set up a rule where nobody is allowed to stop, park or drop off people in the front, but to have one remote location only seems really stupid to me.

I think there are going to be some angry people next week!!

Agreed.
