We are looking for a conservative, comfortable neighborhood that is not in a homeowner%26#39;s association. We currently have a 2400 square foot two story home with about 1/2 acre of land. We would like to downsize a little on the house in retirement, but would like to have an inground pool, so we would like to have 1/2-1 acre. We would probably like to live outside the city, but be close enough to take advantage of all that it has to offer, but right now we are open to all possibilities. Please also give us the names of some good restaurants in the area. Also, we are thinking about staying at the Courtyard by Marriott Northeast while we are in Louisville. Anyone know this hotel? We do not plan to stay downtown on this trip.
Thank you to everyone for the information we have received so far.

Oct 08 travel to LouisvilleConservative? Hmm, avoid the Highlands then. Very wonderful eclectic neighborhood, definetely NOT conservative. Avoid the West End of Louisville, that%26#39;s our poorer side. I would suggest the East End, St. Matthews/Oxmoor area for conservative. The South End is more blue-color and that doesn%26#39;t sound like what you want. If you have money, Anchorage is very affluent. Do you want country or suburbs? If more country, Shelbyville is about 30 miles away and more countrified in my opinion. you could also consider living around the Summit shopping mall. More affluent area as well, several subdivisions. Depends on your price range. I would suggest meeting a real estate agent and getting a feel for what neighborhoods you like. Based on your post, I would say you want the East End or the Summitt area.
FYI, Louisville does not have the greatest public transportation, so expect to drive most places.
Oct 08 travel to LouisvilleI lived in the highlands for 4 years, and yea it%26#39;s eclectic, but I wouldnt consider it non conservative. The young crowd sticks to Bardstown Rd, but there%26#39;s a lot more to the Highlands than just Bardstown. The highlands have a lot of well-to-do people who keep the neighborhood looking immaculate.
If you%26#39;re open to all possibilities, at least take a drive along Trevilian Way between Bardstown Road and Newberg. AND also a drive on Garden Drive between Lexington Rd and Seneca Park Rd.
Not sure how much money you%26#39;re looking to spend, but also the area between I-71 and Brownsboro Rd east of Zorn ave is very nice independent subdivisions with houses of all sizes.
The east end is one subdivision after another mostly with homeowners associations unless you get into the very high priced real estate.
I wouldn%26#39;t consider anything on the West and South sides of the city, but of course it all depends on personal opinion.
I live in the Highlands, so I am partial. However, no one has mentioned Oldham County yet. It seems to be similar to what you%26#39;re looking for.
Actually, I live in the Brooks area(which is South)which is beautiful with lots of land and mountain-like areas, parks such as Jefferson Memorial Forest. Homes are cheaper out in this area, but everything is peaceful and quiet, you%26#39;re close to everything, and beautiful/scenic views. You definitely get your moneys worth. Brooks is about 20 mins from Louisville.
I have a 2300 sq ft. house on 1 1/2 acres of land. Woods are my backyard.
Courtyard is in an excellent location, I haven%26#39;t stayed there so I can%26#39;t tell you if its good or not. You are right there close to very good restaurants in town i.e., Olive Garden (walking distance), Macaroni Grille, Caraba%26#39;s, Panera Bread, TGIFriday%26#39;s, Ruth Chris is just a hop, skip and a jump away off the expressway. There are MANY restaurants in this area. Shopping is in abundance here as well.
I have to apologize because I believe I may have made a mistake with the location of this hotel. I thought it was the Courtyard off Hurstbourne Lane, if it isn%26#39;t then, I am sorry again! I noticed there are 2 Northeast hotels on the hotel list. I don%26#39;t know the area of the other hotel.
