Greetings from the North :)
My friends and I are planning a houseboat trip for Memorial Day weekend on Lake Cumberland.
We have decided on a boat and a lake, but we have a choice of two marinas - Beaver Creek and Burnside as starting points.
Beaver Creek looks like it%26#39;s more near the opening to the lake, where Burnside is more of a branch out from the lake.
Not sure which is more scenic, etc.
Any help/suggestions is/are appreciated!!
TIA!! :)
Lake Cumberland Houseboating - Which Marina?
Not sure what you are looking for when it comes to lake fun... but if you are into the %26#39;party%26#39; scene the closer you can get to 76 falls the better you will be (Grider Hill Marina.) If you are looking for a quite weekend then I would choose Beaver Creek. My personal opinion is that the Burnside water looks dirtier than the Beaver Creek area, but I am a %26#39;westender%26#39; as some would say.

I realize this is way too late for the original post, But.... The lake is very different at each end. The lake is more of a river by Burnside. If you plan to tie the boat in a cove, you are going to have to go a LONG way to find one that is suitable and available. Beaver Creek, (my second home) is about 35 mins. farther south by car. The choices of coves is exponential compared to Burnside. It is also nearer to the center of the main lake area with Johnstown and the State Dock about a 20 min. boat ride away.
Beaver Creek is a smaller, much more personal dock. Any one that is wondering, the water is down, but unless you really know the lake, you wouldn%26#39;t notice it. It is actually easier to tie up because the cedar stumps are close to the water and you don%26#39;t have to climb up the shale to find a tree.
If you plan to go %26#39;out%26#39; to dinner, Burnside is close to Somerset which has many more options than Beaver Creek%26#39;s Monticello, but once you are on the boat, Why would you go back on shore?
Don%26#39;t forget that the lake is surrounded by %26#39;Dry Counties%26#39;, it is at least an hour in any direction to buy alchohol of any kind.
I am in the process of packing to go this weekend. If anyone has questions about the lake I would be happy to try to help.
Just as an update to this post I made in 2007, we ended up going with Beaver Creek Marina and we had a fabulous time. We went again this past May as well. Even if you don%26#39;t go too far from the marina, there are plenty of coves to scope out and secluded areas to play in. We also we able to visit State Dock (holy stairs!!!) for some bread and random items we needed like marine toilet paper. We also made ice runs there as well. I%26#39;m really glad we went with Beaver Creek!! :)
The West end is the most popular section of Lake Cumberland (it%26#39;s 100 miles long) because there are more wide-open spaces and hundreds of secluded coves. State Dock (adjacent to Lake Cumberland State Park and near Jamestown, KY) offers every amenity possible and they have nicest rental houseboats on the lake. We found the site: www.lakecumberland.com to be be very helpful and their Forum answered all of our questions.
