Another proud parent at Ft. Knox for parent weekend

I%26#39;m a little different than the posts than the other I have researched. I%26#39;m an avid Tripadvisor poster and LIKE to travel as does my son. With that in mind, where do you suggest, Louisville, Elizabeth town or Bardstown for a family weekend. Yes we will visit but I would also like to take him out (within the strict 50 mile limit) of Ft. Knox to ';weekend'; and remember why he joined the service ';to see the world';. Unfortunately Mammoth Cave (one of my favorites)is outside the 50 mile limit. I would also appreciate any lodging advise and location/at least 3 star, not budget is a consideration. Perhaps a home/cabin/cottage for the family to stay during graduation (a later date and another opportunity to see the area). Thanks TA

Welcome! I have never stayed close to Ft Knox, but if you pick one of the newer hotels in the Elizabethtown area, you should be fine. If you%26#39;ve never visited Louisville, I think you%26#39;d really enjoy it here. We have many activities on the river front, loads of scenic spots, nice restaurants, etc. Several of us have published ';golists'; here on tripadvisor for Louisville, take a look at those. Mine provides many easy links. Bardstown is a cute, typical small town oozing charm and has My Old KY Home, some antique places, a dinner train and some nearby bourbon distilleries. Totally different experience.

Which weekend will you be here?

Thank you for the reply. I%26#39;ve decided to ';sponsor'; an additional soldier who doesn%26#39;t have family to visit him, so with that in mind I thought Louisville would be the place for 2 young adults. And I thought we should stay by the downtown area so the guys can stay out later if they want and aren%26#39;t stuck in a hotel with mom. Hotels seem to be very booked (pricey) so I think there must be something going on the weekend on July 25. I%26#39;ll save Elizabeth town for graduation in Sept.

I would condider using Priceline for 2 rooms. Use a 3 star downtown search and try for not over 60. If it fails, try the next day a bit higher.

I will search for that weekend and see if I can find special events!

Will do, thanks. Hotwire didn%26#39;t have any downtown but I got Residence inn for $90 military rate.

Ok,would you suggest Seelbach (older but closer to action) or Residence Inn (closer to riverfront park and newer) for 2 young adults?

Residence Inn. Seelbach is a beautiful, historical hotel but has very tiny rooms. Other amenities there are pretty expensive, too. Worth a visit! The residence Inn may be a little ';down the block'; but it%26#39;s easy to get anywhere in downtown by hopping on the trolley. I believe you will find a link to that in my go list here on TA (Live it Up in Louisville for the Weekend)

A really nice, reasonable and fun place to eat is Melillo%26#39;s on Market Street. Family style Italian, big portions, inside and outside seating...everyone there is related and the atmosphere is very friendly. Try to avoid chain restaurants, there are many good dining options that won%26#39;t break you!

Will do, thanks. It%26#39;s been 20 years since I%26#39;ve been to Louisville, I%26#39;m looking forward to a rediscover.
