Restaurants near the Galt House

We are attending a convention at the Galt House in September. A group of 10 of us would like to go out for dinner on Saturday evening - we would like something within walking distance of the Galt House. We are 60%26#39;s-70%26#39;s in age, however walking is not an issue for any of us. We also do not want anything too pricey. Any recommendations?

Restaurants near the Galt House

Hi and welcome! The Galt House has a very pricey restaurant. Across from it is Jeff Ruby%26#39;s, also very pricey.

Within walking distance is 4th Street live, but I don%26#39;t recommend anything there. You could also walk down to Joe%26#39;s Crab Shack by the river but YUCKKKK!!

My advice to you is to board the trolley at the Galt House and take it down to Market Street to Mellilo%26#39;s. (about a 2 minute ride) Call them and make a reservation. It is a lovely place and the food is all homemade and the business is family owned and run. Portions are large and they are friendly and fun. TRUST ME

Thanks to LLindaC. Mellilos sounds perfect. I assume the trolley stops at or near the Galt House.

I also found Bistro 301 through Google. Are you familiar with it?

Thanks again - you have been very helpful. We are looking forward to our trip to Louisville.

yes, the trolley stops directly in front of both places

Click on the map on that page and print it. You take the red trolley which goes down Main and then turns on Market St. You%26#39;ll want to get off at the Shelby Street stop ...829 E Markey St. Tell your driver! Also, the restaurant is on the cozy side, so I would call the a day or two in advance to make your reservation!

Thanks LLinda.

How about Bistro 301 - are you familiar with it?

I have not been there since it reopened and changed the menu. However, it got a good review in today%26#39;s paper! Here%26#39;s the review

I would also recommend several restaurants on Market Street - they would be a little too far to walk, but you could get close with a trolley. Artemisa has a lovely courtyard and good food, or Primo which has terrific Italian food. Both are more expensive than Melillo%26#39;s but have much better food.

Thanks for the tips on Artemisia and Primo and for the newspaper article on Bistro 301 - that was very helpful. I was also looking at the Bristol Bar and Grill-is anyone familiar with this restaurant?

I like the Bristol and can always find something good on their menu, good salads, burgers and pasta. If you want something cheap but in a beautiful historic building, the spagetti factory is decent. Don%26#39;t forget Toast on Market for breakfast.

No one has yet mentioned Proof On Main at the 21C hotel, if you are looking for something a little more upscale. And for upschale Italian dining you might also consider Vincenzo%26#39;s, both of which are within easy walking ditance of the Galt House. I would also like to second the recommendation of Artemesia, which like Mellilo%26#39;s would probably require a taxi. Also in that area of town is one of my favorites, the Mayan Cafe. It is a small place, with excellent food at a very reasonable price.

I%26#39;ve been to Proof twice and really liked it. I also love Primo!! However, I would not recommend the Spaghetti Factory. It is a chain and a poor one at that. The sauce tasted like watered down Ragu. It is a pretty building, though, but the food is akin to Fazoli%26#39;s. I personally dislike Bristol. I got food poisoning there once and my husband had a bad meal with a business associate. (actually 2 bad experiences) The food is mediocre and lackluster. It%26#39;s okay if you just want to ';eat'; but has nothing special to offer ';diners'; IMO. I say this as a personal opinion based on my own experiences with the place. I%26#39;m sure there are others who disagree...
