Hi,
My husband%26#39;s company is wanting him to relocate to Hazard. We are trying to find out as much about the location as we can ahead of time. Such as how the schools are and if it is a good location to raise a family. We have a large family and we don%26#39;t want to pick them up from where we are and move to a place that is less off than here. We would like to know how the cost of living is and any other information that we can find out. We are going to come and see the town. But before we do we are trying to find out if there is any attractions for kids to enjoy as well as my husband and myself. As I said before if anyone has any information that could help us in this situation, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help.

relocation
I%26#39;d think really hard about uprooting my family to move to Hazard. It is pretty far from things and there%26#39;s not a lot of ';big city'; type stuff to do. It%26#39;s very pretty, but very rural. If that%26#39;s what you are looking for, it might be good for your family. My kids would hate it.
Most of the people I met in college from that part of the state were trying to get out, if that tells you anything.
No disrespect to the Hazard area intended, but I wouldn%26#39;t move there.
relocation
I would definitely make a couple of visits to Hazard before making any decisions. As the previous person said, it%26#39;s rural, it%26#39;s fairly isolated and it could be somewhat of a culture shock for your family.
I grew up in Eastern Kentucky about 40 minutes away from Hazard and I must tell you that there isn%26#39;t a lot for kids to do (especially once they hit their teens). Our main activity was cruising around the shopping centers and just generally hanging out. Boredom = mischief.
I personally couldn%26#39;t WAIT to move away. So much so that I actually transfered high schools in my senior year so that I could graduate early and head off to college at 17.
On the flip side, if your family is really into nature %26amp; mountains, Hazard may be fine. The cost of living would certainly be low. I%26#39;d bet the median home price is around $100,000.
Lexington would be the nearest big shopping/dining destination. It%26#39;s about 1 hour and 45 mins. away.
It%26#39;s definitely not ';the big city,'; so think long and hard... What company wants to relocate your husband there (none of my business, but curious)?
One selling point: Lt. Gov. Mongiardo%26#39;s home town.
He works for ICG. Actually the way you are describing Hazard, is the way we live now. There isn%26#39;t anything for the kids to do here and we are pretty rural area also. I, myself love Kentucky in general that is why we were strongly considering the transfer. But we don%26#39;t really know enough about the area. As for choosing Hazard as our city to live is do to being close to the areas that he would be working. Would there be any other cities close to Hazard that anyone would recommend better than Hazard? I would be greatly appreciate any assistance that any one could give me.

I live about an hour away from Hazard in an even smaller town, and if you don%26#39;t mind the parts of rural life that drive some people crazy (mostly the fact that you have to drive an hour or more to get to ';real'; shopping, fine dining, the arts, etc.,) then Hazard can be a great place to live. In my experiences there, it is a friendly town. It does have its own TV station, a community college that brings some arts to town, and a mayor who is committed to making his town a nice place to live. Hazard is in Perry County, but I can tell you that the Hazard City school system is much stronger academically, and in fact, is one of the top 25 or 30 schools in the state, as far as performance on state testing.
I was raised is Hazard but now live in the Washington DC area. From my perspective it was a great place to grow up - rural, safe and small - I attended the city school system referenced in another message and received an excellent education. Re your familiy considerations, the education, commnity and arts (via community college, etc) are all there, especially considering it%26#39;s a rural area. And, yes, just like every other community there are poverty, bad influences, etc. The major drawback for Hazard is the the local economy is cyclical since it%26#39;s based on coal ';boom and bust cycles';...it is subject to swings of prosperity then poverty (at least, for some). It could be a great place to raise your kids, but they may have a tough time finding a great job there when they grow up (why I had to leave).
Thank you. I appreciate the information. I am hopeing my husbands company will allow him a little extra time off for vacation so that we can come down and thoroughly go around the city. But so far it really sounds like a place that my family and I would enjoy living in. But I know that you can go by sound alone.
