travelling through Kentucky

Myself and my husband are travelling to Washington DC at the end of September, and stay for a couple of nights. Our plan, although not set in stone, is to drive to West Virginia, Kentucky, Memphis, Tennessee, North Carolina(where we visit relatives) and back to Washington DC. I am aware of the most popular sites to see in each of these places but I was wondering if anyone has advice on places of interest in between these places . We have three weeks in total and any advice would be great.

Thanks.

I do that drive to Virginia from time to time and dependng on what your interests are, there are some wonderful historical sites along the way in Kentucky.

The KY Bourdon Trail is a fun way to spend some time on the backstreets of Kentucky and learning about how bourdon flourished in America. Even my tea tottling MIL enjoyed our weekend there this past Labor Day Holiday.

If you come through Lexington take in the Horse Park and a couple of horse farm tours. Lexington is known as ';The Horse Capital of the World'; and is beautiful. If you come through this area in October be sure to go to Keeneland. It is a beautiful, historic race track.

Woodford Reserve is a distillery in Versailles which is about 15 minutes from Lexington.

In Louisville, Kentucky there are 2 hour luncheon cruises on the Belle of Louisville ( a steamboat paddler) down the Ohio River on Saturdays and Sundays in September and October. Check out their website www.belleoflouisville.org to see if this is something that would interest you and if it fits your schedule.
