Thunder over Louisville hotel

Which downtown hotel offers the best view for thunder?

Thanks.

Thunder over Louisville hotel

Any of the downtown hotels (Hyatt, Marriott, Seelbach, Brown) should have nice views but the official headquarters for thunder is at the Galt House. The control station is set up there. We stayed on the Jeffersonville Indiana side (which is right over the bridge to downtown Louisville) at the Fairfield Inn one year and had a great time. Things are a little quieter on the Indiana side because much of the land is privately owned by hotels and restaurants. At the Fairfield they gave us wristbands so no one other than hotel guests are allowed on their property. We would come and go to our room throughout the day without having to fight with crowds at all and at night we brought a blanket down to their lawn and watched the fireworks.

Thunder over Louisville hotel

Thanks. That%26#39;s a good idea. I%26#39;m not that crazy about big crowds, so will definitely consider this. How far in advance do you think I need to reserve a room? Do they provide free breakfast??

When I stayed there they had a free continental breakfast and they also had an indoor pool which the kids liked. I would book as soon as they open up rooms because the waterfront hotels usually sell out before thunder and the prices usually go up not down. I heard on the news that about 800,000 people attended this years thunder! BTW, I believe the date for next year is Saturday April 21st. Good luck!

Yeah, 800,000 was what I heard attended also. I guess I will call them to see if I can go ahead and reserve a room. I had the date already but thanks anyway.

I have seen you on the NYC forum. Are you planning on returning to NYC soon?

My husband just told me his next job is in NYC in May....I am so happy, I gonna go up there for a few days. NYC is awesome!

I%26#39;m addicted to that forum! I have the Courtyard by Marriott Times Square booked for this Christmas for super cheap and can%26#39;t wait! We stayed at the Marquis last Christmas so I guess we%26#39;re trying to make it a yearly tradition. Nothing beats New York at Christmas, it%26#39;s breathtaking.

We went in March 2005. It rained the whole time. It was cold too. But, we still enjoyed the city. I bet it is BEAUTIFUL at Christmas time. I would love to go then but it seems I%26#39;m more enthusiastic then my travel mates.

I would love to go with someone that loved the city as much as I do. My husband likes it, but we had planned on going maybe Sept or Oct this year and he was like, ';Why don%26#39;t we go to Florida instead?'; I was like, ';NO WAY!!';

I mean don%26#39;t get me wrong, I like Florida but NYC is by far my favorite, I%26#39;ve only been once, but that%26#39;s all it took for me to fall in love.

I%26#39;m addicted to the NYC forum also, I go on there several times a day :)

By the way, we drove to NYC and stayed at the Travel Inn....FREE parking! That was a huge savings. Plus our hotel was a double, double for $105 a night. What rate did you get at the Marriot for Xmas?

The Courtyard is $159 Dec23rd then it drops to $99 for the 24th and 25th! Surrounding dates go for way over $200 so I guess it%26#39;s a slower weekend in Dec being Christmas day and all. It is right near Bryant Park which has a great ice skating rink and Christmas market in the winter. The Travel Inn is awesome if you are driving, you save a fortune just on parking. Although I%26#39;ve never stayed there, I%26#39;ve recommended it to friends who drove and they liked it as well. Luckily for me, my whole family loved NY, the kids actually preferred it to Disney, maybe it will grow on your hubby : )

You got a great deal, that%26#39;s for sure.

Ms Alicia,

Is the Fairfield Inn called something else now that you stayed in on the Indiana side? I can%26#39;t seem to find it.

Thanks.

  • Bourbon Trail

We are coming to Kentucky in April for a bachelor%26#39;s party. We want to do some/all of the bourbon trail, but also experience some night life. Would it be best to stay in Louisville or Lexington? Also which distilleries would be best to go to?

    Thanks

    Bourbon Trail

I%26#39;m just going to make a very uneducated reply here because I don%26#39;t drink bourbon, but here%26#39;s what I%26#39;d do:

Prior to the trip, have a bourbon tasting party. Then pick your top 3 bourbons and plan your trip based around them. If two of your top three are closer to Louisville, stay there. If closer to Lexington...

I have only been to Maker%26#39;s Mark, and it is a neat tour. I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;re all pretty much the same, though.

An interesting point is that the county in which Maker%26#39;s is located is a dry county, so no sampling. However, it%26#39;s really cool to watch them dip the bottles by hand. You used to be able to do one yourself if I remember correctly.

If you stay in Louisville, there is plenty of nightlife downtown and around Bardstown Road in the Highlands area of town. I don%26#39;t know about Lexington.

    Good luck and drive safely!

    Bourbon Trail

My pick would be Bardstown for the bourbon trail - but I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll find much night life there! It%26#39;s closer to Louisville than it is to Lexington, but if you want to learn about bourbon, that is the place! (Lynchburg TN is even better, but DEFINITELY no night life there! LOL!)

You%26#39;ll have a great time. Personally, I%26#39;d start with a day at Keeneland (Lexington) and go out that night in downtown Lex. It is BY FAR the best thing happening in KY in April. Then, I%26#39;d work my way west, starting at Labrot %26amp; Graham Distillery, makers of Woodford Reserve, then heading to Frankfort for the Buffalo Trace Distillery tour (generous tastings). Then, Wild Turkey is nearby in Lawrenceburg or you could make the about an hour trip to Bardstown for the Maker%26#39;s Mark tour.

You might be interested in this article:

    …nytimes.com/2007/…

I would vote to start with the distilleries in Bardstown and make your way east to Lexington. It is a college town with a pretty nicely placed cluster of bars in the down town area. Also, you might check but if Keenland is running it will be worth the effort to make it out on a bright sunny spring day.

I haven%26#39;t been to all of the distilleries but Buffalo Trace is my favorite so far. You don%26#39;t have to be a bourbon drinker to have a fun time on their tour. IMO for April Lexington is the place to be. I can%26#39;t wait for The races in April. Counting down the days! :)

    Kentucky Horse Park

I%26#39;ve been to the website, but does anyone have a review of Kentucky Horse Park? What is there to do with 5 and 7 year olds? Will they be able to ride their own horse, or with a parent? Where would anyone recommend we stay? What are some other neat areas to visit? Thank you. WE are going in June.

    Kentucky Horse Park

You will find several reviews right here on Tripadvisor. Just do a quick search for Kentucky Horse Park.

I took my daughter for her 9th birthday and she enjoyed it but she takes riding lessons and is a real horse enthusiast. We did the trail ride where there were many chilren on their own horses, but I don%26#39;t know what the minimum age is. It is a very slow walk with the horses lined up head to tail and they just follow each other, which is good news for first time riders but can be quite boring for experienced riders. The park admission includes the shows, a short ';tour'; of the park by horse drawn carriage and the museum but the trail ride is additional.

    Kentucky Horse Park

We really like the new Hilton Homewood suites. A little further than some of the other hotels but much nicer IMO and very close to restaurants and shopping.

    An off night?: Heirloom disappoints

After enjoying quite a few wonderful lunches and dinners at Heirloom in Midway----I hit a bump in the road one night last week.

Right from the beginning, something was %26#39;off%26#39; about it.

The server brought a bowl of cold bread with a frozen solid cube of butter to the table......with an iced tea that was so dark and cloudy it was undrinkable.

This was followed by the prosciutto-wrapped mozarella appetizer that was cold in the center. The dining room was not busy---why would they be rushing cold food out of the kitchen like that?

The pork tenderloin entree was very good. The Valrhona chocolate cake was good---but looked different somehow.

I commented on the cold appetizer and it was removed from my bill with an apology.

So what%26#39;s going on there? Did someone in the kitchen take the night off---or have things changed at Heirloom?

    An off night?: Heirloom disappoints

That is a shame. I have yet to make it there, but hopefully I will fare better when I do.

    An off night?: Heirloom disappoints

Not sure how to answer your question, but we went again for lunch last month and the service was definitely a notch down from normal. They were filled to the max (no room at the bar either). A couple walked in and stood in the doorway for a few minutes before flagging down a waiter. When told there was no room, they asked to be placed on a waiting list. The server/waiter responded that they don%26#39;t have a waiting list and kept walking. The couple just sort of stood there for a second, not really knowing what to say/do and then just walked out. It was very odd, as it seemed they were turning away business.

Service was slow, the table behind us had to ask about their food three separate times before it finally came (with apologies) from the kitchen. They were already seated and nibbling on something when we arrived, and we were finished eating our lunch before they finally got theirs. Of course refills and ';how is your food?'; were absent, but I did hear a server tell a table that they were a bit overwhelmed with the crowd, as they are not normally this busy on Saturdays for lunch; he mentioned the Black Tulip was closed (that day) which increased traffic at Heirlom.

I didn%26#39;t notice any difference with the food. However, had that visit been my first, I do not know that I would be a fan. It was extremely chaotic and slow.

Please post if you have another visit or find out about any changes!

My enthusiasm for Heirloom has waned a bit. I don%26#39;t expect to be back in there until after the first of the year......

I had lunch at Heirloom last weekend---my first visit since the disappointing experience of last October.

Happy to report that everything was great. I enjoyed my lunch.

Their sidewalk sign said they had been selected as the best new restaurant in Ky by the Lane Report...

WANTED: ideas for 1 night out W/ 2 KIDS

We will be spending three nights in Louisville next Spring.

The tentative itinerary has us spending 1 day in Cincinnati, 1 day in Lexington (Kentucky Horse Park), and 1 day at Churchill Downs.

My wife, and I, are looking for ideas that will get us out of our hotel room after dark. Kids are ages 3 %26amp; 7. We are looking for ideas on any of the following: themed restaurants, dinner shows, evening walks, or any other unique ';Louisville'; kid-friendly experiences.

Thanks in advance for all your help. We can%26#39;t wait to visit your city.

WANTED: ideas for 1 night out W/ 2 KIDS

Greetings! I do hope that you are visiting those places before coming to Louisville and not taking day trips, right? This is very confusing. A day trip to Lexington would be fine, but a day in Cinci/Newport....you should spend the night there! The kids will like the Newport Levee and the Aquarium.

What time in Spring? The week before Derby is chock full of festival events (and higher prices) Where will you stay in Louisville? Three year olds have limited attention span, but we do have trolleys running around downtown, plus a nice river front. I hope you aren%26#39;t planning on taking kids to the Downs . Themed restaurants downtown for kids.....The Old Spaghetti Factory and Joe%26#39;s Crab Shack are very popular.

WANTED: ideas for 1 night out W/ 2 KIDS

I%26#39;d be more than happy to try and clarify my original post.

We will be in Louisville Father%26#39;s Day weekend (mid June).

We have booked our room at the Hilton Garden Inn - Airport.

We will be spending a day in Cincinnati (en route) to Louisville.

We were planning to spend Father%26#39;s Day (Sunday) at Churchill Downs WITH the kids. Never been to Churchill Downs, however we%26#39;ve been to horse tracks in Minnesota and Wisconsin and found both to be extremely family friendly. Is Churchill Downs not family friendly? No playgrounds? No kids around the paddock? No kids watching the finish line? Please let me know if the crowds and staff at Churchill Downs frown upon children, so we can reroute our trip.

The trip into Lexington would be a day trip, yes, we are willing to drive an hour, or two, each way.

I can%26#39;t seem to find any ';family friendly'; attractions that are open past 5 o%26#39;clock or so. I%26#39;m worried we may be stranded in our hotel room the three evenings that we are in Louisville.

Louisville Waterfront park downtown is a good place for familys. There are playgrounds, walking trails, fountains, sprinklers, and more. (there is a website w/more info and a map). You can rent bikes or take a carrage ride. Six Flags Ky Kingdom is a family amusement park that is fun. You could eat at King Fish on River Road ( playground and putt-putt), sit outside on a picnic table by the river. You could ride the trolly around downtown. The kids will like that. The Belle of Louisville may have some evening cruises also. Just a few suggestions. Hope this helps.

Thanks for clarifying! I didn%26#39;t mean the Downs was not family friendly, sorry. There is a wonderful Derby museum and a Derby Cafe for lunch. The paddock area is open to everyone so the kids can see the horses and jockeys. Beyond that, the races are spaced about 20 minutes apart so there%26#39;s not a lot to see and do. No playgrounds or such. Still, you could pack in a good few hours and make it fun for all

The Hilton Garden Inn is a nice enough hotel, but it%26#39;s not near anything but the airport. I wish you would reconsider and book downtown at the Marriott or Galt House. The Galt House has river view rooms and the trolley will pick you up at the door.Kingfish has pretty grounds and river view, basic fried fish so-so food. Tumbleweed on the river, much the same. Close to the enormous playground. Further down River Road are several parks and Captain%26#39;s Quarter%26#39;s restaurant with lots of outdoor seating, live music and lots of river scene for families. By the wharf is Joe%26#39;s Crab Shack- kids love it there. Waiters do crazy dances, loads of fun. The Belle%26#39; of Louisville Steamboat%26#39;s Friday night cruises are public, but they are geared to an older crowd. (music and dancing and drinks) However, it does daily lunch cruises on Saturday at 11:30 and Sunday at 1. I should be playing the loud calliope that Sunday, so if you board early I%26#39;ll treat you to a special song ;-). There are also family friendly places across the river on the Indiana bank. If you%26#39;re willing to drive a little, my young kids used to love Gattiland with the pizza/pasta buffet and loads of games. A popular place to eat downtown is the Spaghetti Factory. The pasta tastes like Ragu, but the place is cool. For authentic Italian at a good price and very family friendly, you can%26#39;t beat Melillo%26#39;s on Market Street. They have a bocce ball court and a nice fountain area which the kids love.

With your busy days, I%26#39;ll bet that 3 year old will be ready to turn in early! Have a wonderful trip and good luck with the weather.

If the Bats are in town, how about taking in a game at Slugger Field? The seats are cheap and it%26#39;s a beautiful intimate stadium. You can even bring blankets and sit in the grass on a hill overlooking centerfield. There%26#39;s a playground and a merry-go-round. Even if you don%26#39;t make it too long, it%26#39;s not that expensive.

I think a whole day at Churchill would send your family over the edge. I%26#39;d plan on a half day, preferrably the early part and then do something else later in the afternoon/evening. Don%26#39;t get me wrong, I love Churchill Downs, but even I get bored there sometimes.

My kids like the Old Spaghetti Factory, but another idea would be to eat at Rocky%26#39;s Italian Grill in Jeffersonville, IN, right across the river, and then come back over to play on the playgrounds at the Great Lawn. Tumbleweed is on our side of the river right next to one of the playgrounds, but it is usually HUGELY crowded in the evenings.

I also second a ride on the Belle if you can.

2 40 yr old guys looking for nightlife weds

I am not sure exactly where you are staying at in Louisville but I would check out 4th Street Live.

There are 5 or 6 different bars/lounges and quite a few restaurants including Hard Rock Cafe. There are a few retail stores and bowling alley and I b elieve an Imax theatre but could be wrong. Anyway, i provided the link for the official website if you are interested.

    The official website is: http://www.4thstlive.com/index.cfm

2 40 yr old guys looking for nightlife weds

    Dayton

This is probably too late, but steer clear of 4th St. Live. It%26#39;s a collection of corporate theme restaurants and bars. Not a taste of Louisville by any means.

Try Bardstown Rd./Baxter Ave. area. I would suggest you park on the street if front of Molly Malone%26#39;s and start walking around. There are several bars in that 2 block area alone.

Here is a nice list of places in that area. I copied this from a post by Seagrover (thanks Seagrover).

    begin

The area that we locals refer to as ';Bardstown Road'; actually begins on Baxter Ave. if you are coming from the north (which you would be if you are coming from the Marriott). Baxter Ave will eventually run into Bardstown Rd.

The whole thing is about a 3 mile strip starting with the Phoenix Hill Tavern and pretty much ends with the Bambi Bar. Be advised, the list below is from memory and although many of these places serve food, but I only listed the places that feel more bar, than restaurant. There are still a ton of restaurants that I didn%26#39;t include.

Phoenix Hill Tavern - Cavernous. Multiple live bands on most nights. Draws a young, college crowd. Can be cheesy.

Outlook Inn - Divey. Great Bloodies. Hipster local crowd of mixed ages. Pool tables. Juke box in back.

Flanagan%26#39;s - Irish. Nice back patio. Lots of beers on tap.

    Mixed/college crowd. Younger on weekends.

Molly Malones - Irish. Great outside space. College/prepster crowd.

Wet Willies - Those swirling daiquiri machines. The crowd seems cheesy to me, but I don%26#39;t spend a lot of time in there.

O%26#39;Shea%26#39;s - Irish. Great outside patio. Live music on some nights. Good all around bar.

    Akiko%26#39;s - Karaoke.

Wick%26#39;s Pizza - Pizza pub meets bar. Live music on some nights.

Cahoot%26#39;s - Divey. Locals mostly. Mixed crowd. Pool tables.

BW3%26#39;s - Wings. College crowd. Sports. Sports. Sports.

Back Door - Behind ValuMarket. Hard to find. Locals only. Very mixed crowd. Divey. Lots of pool tables.

Highland%26#39;s Tap Room - Small. Live music. Good outdoor area.

Cumberland Brews - Brew pub. Small. Comfy.

Za%26#39;s Pizza - Good selection on tap. Good pizza. TV%26#39;s. Comfy.

Hideaway Saloon - Divey. A bit hard to find. Locals. Deadheads. Live music on many nights. Pool tables upstairs.

Cafe 360 - Open really late for food. Fully stocked bar. Hookah lounge. Hipster/mixed/Highlands crowd.

Asiatique - Upscale asian restaurant until around 11pm. Clubby/DJ thing in the basement late night.

Big Dave%26#39;s Outpost - Neighborhood bar. Pub grub %26amp; beers.

Dundee Tavern - Neighborhood bar. Good sports watching set-up.

Left Field Lounge - Divey/hole in the wall. Strange, but in a good way.

Bambi Bar - Neighborhood bar. Mixed crowd.

My best suggestion would be for you guys to begin your evening on the corner closest to Molly Malones %26amp; Flanagans (Baxter Ave. and Morton Ave.) From there, you are within easy walking distance of several bars. Most places will only have a small cover (if they have one at all)

    end.

The area around Za%26#39;s and Cumberland Brews is a cool little area. You can walk around and see some of the locals in action. Always interesting. There is an awesome sushi place right there called Sapporo.

    Hope you have/had fun.

Can a 5%26#39;8%26#39;%26#39; 320lb person fit through this portion of the tour? We went on this tour on our honeymoon and was much smaller then, and can%26#39;t remember how tight the passage way was. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Fat man misery

I would contact the park directly and pose this question. You can find their number on nps.gov. I had to call the park for another question, and I felt the person on the other end was extremely helpful! I can assure you of one thing: if there%26#39;s any doubt of your being able to fit, the rangers won%26#39;t let you take the tour. I read on one web article that in sections, the walls in Fat Man%26#39;s Misery are only 18 inches apart. If you angle yourself just the right way, it certainly could work, but I would want to be sure. We just did this last year, and to me, the Tall Man%26#39;s Misery section was more challenging because of the stooping. I%26#39;m only 5%26#39;3'; and could really empathize with a person well over 6 feet tall going through. All in all, both sections of the Historic Tour were quite fun.

We are driving from Detroit area thru to Memphis and want to stay somewhere close to the Mammoth Caves park. Any suggestions for a city / town near the interstate and the park?

    Thanks

Cave City has lots of accommodations. You can check them out from the Cave City official website:

where to stay near Mammoth Caves enroute to Memphis

    Thanks for your help.

Do you know anything about Barren River State Resort Park? Is it close the Mammoth Caves park? Also Cave Springs Bed and Breakfast in Smith%26#39;s Grove?

Once again, thanks for the help.

I would highly recommend the relatively new Comfort Inn %26amp; Suites in Cave City. I am not familiar with the other places you asked about. The Comfort Inn %26amp; Suites is only about 8 miles from the park and has extremely clean rooms. We stayed in one of the suites, and it was quite large with very comfortable beds. The bathroom was lovely. They also have a very nice continental breakfast. I have a review on this site. Check it out!

I also highly recommend the Sahara Steak House in Cave City . It was our best meal of the vacation, and we visited 3 states! The meats melt in your mouth, and the vegetable soup is wonderful!

I%26#39;m not sure when you are visiting, but I strongly recommend advance reservations for the cave tours, especially in summer. They sell out quickly, especially on weekends. I also have a review of Mammoth Cave on the site. Feel free to check that one also. If you need any help/advice on which tour to take, let me know. There are tours for all abilities. They are described quite well on nps.gov under Mammoth Cave. Advance reservations can be made at recreation.gov.

    Have a great trip!

Thanks for the recommendation. I will check out Comfort Inn and Suites. Also the sites you recommend for the caves. We are going in early March, so I wouldn%26#39;t think it would be that busy. Not sure what tour to take, but I will do some research.

Reservations for the tours are a necessity in summer - but still a good idea in March - especially on a weekend. And during the week, you could be competing with school groups.

Most Scenic Drive and Sights--Louisville to Lexington

Hi, Everyone--I%26#39;d love to visit Kentucky, flying into Louisville and driving to Lexington. I%26#39;d really appreciate your help and recommendations with: 1. What is best, most scenic route to drive Louisville-Lexington? 2. And I%26#39;ll have to drive back, so what is the second most scenic route? 3. What are must-sees in Louisville? 4. What are must-sees in Lexington? I enjoy city tours and of course want to see the beautiful countryside.

Thank you for all your help.

Most Scenic Drive and Sights--Louisville to Lexington

I%26#39;ve made a lot of trips from Lex to Louisville, but unfortunately all on the interstate. However, one way I would definitely take is 421 from the city of Frankfort into Lexington. There are other routes, but I absolutely love seeing the horse farms out there, especially in the Spring when everything is green. On the way back take 60, Versailles Rd, (Kentuckians say it like its spelled, not the correct French pronunciation). There are really impressive horse farms in this area too. You can also swing in the candy shop that will be on your left. I think it is a Ruth Hunt, I%26#39;m not for sure. You can get good Bourbon chocolates there.

Some great things to do in the Lexington area include:

    Woodford Reserve Distillery Tour

Buffalo Trace Distillery Tour (this is in Frankfort)

Equus Run Winery - the owner has a great story

Keeneland Race Track - if it is April or Oct when you visit

Walk at the Arboretum near UK%26#39;s campus

Eat downtown at Alfalfa%26#39;s (very earthy, organic) great

Visit the Farmer%26#39;s Market downtown on a Saturday if you are there April through Oct

Grab some pasteries at Magee%26#39;s Bakery near downtown

There are lots of others, but I%26#39;ll stop there. I%26#39;m sure others can add more of their favorites.

I took a really interesting historic tour of the city last year. I think it was offered by the Bluegrass Trust, but I%26#39;m not sure that they do this on a regular basis. Here is the web-site: http://www.bluegrasstrust.org/

Also the Visitors Center can help with lots of ideas and maybe a city tour: http://www.visitlex.com/

Most Scenic Drive and Sights--Louisville to Lexington

From Louisville take US 60 (Shelbyville Rd) all the way to Frankfort. You will pass through Simpsonville and Shelbyville. If its around lunch time take in Claudia Sanders Dinner House. Its between Simpsonville and Shelbyville. Also in Shelbyville is Wakefield Scearce Gallery. It is an historic girls school that now sells fabulous antiques.

Once you get to Frankfort you will need to get to the Frankfort bypass (anyone out there help me with route #?). Then after you pass under the interstate be looking for Old Frankfort Pike. This will take you into downtown Lexington and IMO is one of the prettiest roadways around.

Take a horse drawn carriage ride downtown Lexington. Most of the drivers have been around a while and you will get an excellent history of Lexington.

Go to the visitor center, and get the map that takes you on a wonderful countryside auto tour. You get a lot of horse farms, regular farms, barns, gardens, lovely homes, stone fences, apple farms/cider mills, forest, meadow, field, streams, curvy roads, mild hilly country. We thoroughly enjoyed this. You may want to try Kentucky Horse Park, the museum isn%26#39;t too bad and they have a good gift shop, though the park needs more of a ';pull.'; Go shopping downtown, and maybe take a drive to Berea-about one hour south, a cool little college town with arts and crafts. I also have heard, but never been, that the baseball bat company offers a good tour in Louisville.

    4th street live

Me and my buddies are looking to come and visit the so called 4th street live the weekend of Feburary15th and looking for an opioin on what clubs are hot? Our season is over and missed making it to the Superbowl so driving up from Wisconsin would be a start in Louisville to our off-season.

You might want to mention your ages and what kind of music you%26#39;re into. The bars and clubs at 4th St. Live all have different themes and music.

And, if you want to check out some places that have a more traditional Louisville feel, you might want to try the Bardstown Rd./Baxter Ave. strip. Here is a description of several places there that was written by Seagrover. I%26#39;m just cutting and pasting:

    Bachelor Party

I am planning a bachelor party in Louisville for this spring, and I am looking for some suggestions. This will be a group of approximately 15 guys in their upper 20’s. First off, I don’t know much about the Louisville area, so any help is appreciated. I have heard some good things about the Bardstown area.

We are looking for the best area to get a hotel and the best hotels in that area for the price. I’m not looking to spend a ton of money on hotel rooms that we won’t be spending that much time in. We will probably be going to bars in the Bardstown area and also the 4th street area (I’ve heard a little about these places by reading other posts). We will also be going to other establishments that are frequented by gentlemen during bachelor parties… (I appreciate any suggestions on such establishments). So, what area and hotels are the best for what I am planning on doing? I would like to find a hotel with a suite for the bachelor.

Also, we are going to golf one morning while we are in town. We are looking for a “decent” public course with low greens fees...nothing special.

    Thanks for your help!!

    Bachelor Party

Be careful when you are booking a room or asking around that you actually ask for ';Bardstown Road';, not just Bardstown. You might end up with a room in Bardstown, KY which is about 45 minutes from Louisville. I think you are talking about the ';Bardstown Road'; area, which is an area of town in Louisville that has tons of cool bars, restaurants and shops. You%26#39;ll definitely want to visit this section of town on your visit but unfortunately there aren%26#39;t any hotels in the immediate area so you%26#39;ll have to drive or cab in. It%26#39;s only about a 5-10min drive from downtown. I%26#39;d suggest you stay downtown where you could walk to 4th street live and drive to your other destinations. The Galt House, Marriott, or Hyatt are all nice options that should offer suites. When exactly are you planning on visiting this Spring? Just be sure to keep in mind that certain times in April (and of course the first weekend in May) can be expensive because of Derby festivities.

    Bachelor Party

You%26#39;ll probably want to stay somewhere downtown. As previously mentioned. No hotels in the Bardstown Road area.

The Residence Inn by Marriott on Market St. is really close to Slugger Field (if baseball is of any interest). Looks like the season starts on April 11th. Good place to see a game. Not a bad seat in the place. Brownings Brew Pub and the more upscale Park Place on Main is also located on Slugger Field (no ticket required to visit the restaurants).

    web.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp…

    www.diningonmain.com/Brownings/cuisine.html

PT%26#39;s Showclub (on Market St. downtown) is probably your best bet for a ';gentlemen%26#39;s club';. At least, it seems to be the least seedy to me. But I%26#39;m a girl, so some guys out there may have a better suggestion.

Louisville has a bunch of public golf courses. I guess my recommendation (based solely on location) would be.....

Cherokee Golf Course (located in Cherokee Park) in the Highlands/Bardstown Rd. area.

    louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/golf/cherokee.htm

Seneca Golf Course (located in Seneca Park which connects with Cherokee Park)

    louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/golf/seneca.htm

Note: The last time I played Cherokee (a couple of years ago), they did not want you to bring your own beer in a cooler, so be stealthy. You can buy it there also.

Bardstown Road/Baxter Ave. for pubs, bars and restaurants. You%26#39;ll find the locals here.

Fourth Street Live. Just be aware that it%26#39;s a little more themed. Not so many locals there. Tends to draw a younger crowd. But! I think it might be a good choice for a bachelor party. Definitely check it out.

Check the LEO and Velocity (our local, weekly entertainment guides) to see what%26#39;s going on around town as far as live music etc.

    velocityweekly.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

    http://www.leoweekly.com/

Just in case you need a validating view from a male:

    Yep, P.T.s.

And if you want to mess with the bachelor%26#39;s head:

While you%26#39;re in the area of PT%26#39;s, pop around the corner and drag him into the Connection for the drag show. It%26#39;s a gay bar with awesome dance music and a highly entertaining drag show.

Don%26#39;t tell him where you%26#39;re going before you go in. You can%26#39;t tell from the outside what it is. I don%26#39;t even think there is a sign out front.

It%26#39;s on Floyd St., right around the corner from PTs.

Of course, my sense of humor may be very different from yours.

  • Destin condos

I am planning a trip to Destin in August and was curious on a couple of condos. I think I have been on every website there is and have found Shoreline Towers or the Majestic Sun? I was wondering if anyone could tell me about these two or if the beach is nice around them.

    Destin condos

Awesome! You mean we%26#39;re getting a beach on the Ohio River? My kids will be pumped.

    Destin condos

Okae! Ah ha ha ha. That was a good one!

....but seriously, I think maybe Paylee was banking on the fact that every single Louisvillian has logged some vacation time in Destin. We usually stay a little further east in the Seagrove area so, I am not familiar with Majestic Sun or Shoreline Towers. Paylee, you%26#39;d probably get better info if you re-ask your question on the Destin, Florida section of TripAdvisor. Good luck!

    whitewater trip advice needed

We are attending a family reunion at the General Butler state park in northern Kentucky in early August 08. We would like to add a whitewater raft trip but we need some advice on where to go. Ideally we would like to stay in the Northern Kentucky area. I know West Virginia has a number of good river trips, but how about Kentucky? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    whitewater trip advice needed

I think you%26#39;re out of luck. The only whitewater raft company I know of in KY is in the far SE corner - a LONG way from General Butler.

    whitewater trip advice needed

Yep. As mentioned. There%26#39;s one at Cumberland Falls (near Corbin, KY), but it would be almost a 3 hour, one-way drive down I-75 from Gen. Butler. That would be a pretty tiring day trip, but if you wanted to spend the night at Cumberland Falls, it could be done.

Thanks for the feedback. How about any rafting in southern Indiana or Ohio?

Cant decide where to stay???downtown or near town

Im having a hard time deciding where we should stay. I have been reading all the reviews on the hotels that interest me but still cant decide. Here are the hotels that interest me.

    Galt-

    Wingate

    Hyatt

    Hawthorne

Embassy- I like this one a lot but not sure onlocation. Offer free breakfast.

maybe Hawthorne- read its in bad area-noisy

I know some are downtown and some arent I guess thats another ??? It seems like they charge ALOT more for downtown hotels and 12.00 for parking Wow. How is the drive from those hotels that say they are 15 min away?? alot a traffic? What hotels are near downtown but not right in the middle.

Once more question,Where are the ';goto list'; located. Thanks a million

Cant decide where to stay???downtown or near town

from what I can tell, the Wingate and Embassy suites are off Hurstbourne Lane and I-64. Terrible area. Loads of traffic, major traffic jams all day. Lots and lots of chain restaurants, etc. The Hawthorne is close to the Mall St Matthews in the East End. Not too bad a location, but not really convenient either. Go for the Galt or Hyatt. Also, there%26#39;s a Hampton Inn downtown which might fit your budget and it%26#39;s convenient. Also a Courtyard by Marriott and a Marriott Residence inn.

I%26#39;m not sure where you%26#39;re getting your rates, my source said parking was $9 at the Galt House. Anyway, you%26#39;ll save gas by doing the downtown attractions by foot and trolley. Also, start at www.kayak.com and search for a hotel on the given dates. That site will find the cheapest rate offered on those properties whether it%26#39;s from the hotel itself or an online travel site such as Expedia.

Cant decide where to stay???downtown or near town

Can you give us the location of the places you are thinking of outside of downtown? If they are around the Hurstborne area, the other poster is right...Traffic is HORRIBLE at certain times of the day.

I was just looking for my husband, he usually doenst like to stay right in the thick of things so I was looking maybe to stay a couple miles outside of town but by the sounds of it it maybe better/cheaper to stay where the action is at this time :)

ANy comments on Courtyard by Marriot downtown? I just found (what I think is) a really good rate 119.00/nite with breakfast. I thought that sounded decent. However, the reviews are all just medium to good and its only 2 stars whatever that is worth. But pics and description look good. What do you think.

    Thanks :)

I have no idea about the Courtyard by Mariott. If you stay at the one off Hurstborne Lane, I think it%26#39;s pretty new, but it%26#39;s in a very high traffic area.

The downtown one is new as well. It%26#39;s right in the middle of many of the places you might like to see, but I%26#39;m not sure how nice it is either.

You probably can%26#39;t go wrong with either one.

    Gentlemen's Clubs

I’m coming to town in a couple of weeks for a long weekend (business %26amp; pleasure). Does anyone have any advise about good gentlemen’s clubs. I read about PT’s elsewhere but that was the only one mentioned but there appears to be several others in town.

Also, any clubs that do live blues music on the weekends?

    Gentlemen's Clubs

Pt%26#39;s is the best one downtown or anywhere in Louisville - IMO. The next best would be Trixies and/or The Godfather. Anything else is probably a little seedy - unless that is what you%26#39;re looking for....

Stevie Ray%26#39;s Blues Bar is downtown and has good blues most nights. Other bars have blues on some nights but it depends on when you are coming.

Feb 2008 lodging options Mammoth Cave area, fun stuff

I would recommend the Comfort Inn %26amp; Suites in Cave City. This is the newer property near the Cracker Barrel. We stayed in a suite with 2 queen beds, sofa, microfridge, and large bathroom. The room was very spacious and clean, and staff were helpful. I have a review on this site; check it out.

We visited here last summer, and I think most of what we did was seasonal. We did Kentucky Down Under, but the only open this time of year there is the onyx cave. There is a cave museum in Horse Cave, and you could always head to Bowling Green, about 30 minutes away. They have the Corvette Museum there.

If you have any questions about the cave tours, let me know, and I might be able to help. I have reviews of Mammoth Cave %26amp; Diamond Caverns on this site also just in case you%26#39;d like to take a look.

    Enjoy your weekend.

    Red Roof Inn Lexington KY

    Hey Everyone!

We will be passing through Lexington KY on our way to TN in Aug and I was wondering if I could ask a question about the Red Roof Inn right off I-75 in Lexington. We stayed there years ago on a similar trip and really liked it, it was clean and safe and near the Cracker Barrel (we do not have Cracker Barrel in Canada and always stop there the first night through). I have heard people say that there is now a Hustler Shop or something right next door so we have avoided it since we travel with young kids and really do not want to have to make those kinds of explanations. My question is this : How close is this shop (if it is still there), is it noticeable and does anyone know whether there is any sort of...clientelle loitering around? I hate to sound like such a prude but two families travelling with a total of 4 children 8 and under....I am sure you understand.

    Thanks

    mopm2two2

    Red Roof Inn Lexington KY

    I understand your issue.

The Hustler Store is still there and it is a prominent fixture. It is a clean and well lit place and I don%26#39;t think loitering is an issue. I don%26#39;t think you would have to go into a lot of detail with your children. You could probably just say it is a lingerie shop like Victoria%26#39;s Secret. In the window display, I don%26#39;t recall there being anything too outrageous. I really don%26#39;t think you would need to be too concerned. This is a safe area and convenient to Hamburg Place shopping etc. I would be interested to see what others think. I don%26#39;t have children, so I don%26#39;t want to steer you to some place that would not be right for your family. That being said, it will probably be fine.

    Red Roof Inn Lexington KY

Thanks for the post....We had stayed there before and are familiar with the area, before the store was built...I remember the Red Roof being clean and a great deal, which is what we want for a one night stopover on the trip South. I just wanted to double check as the other family travelling with us would likely be more offended than maybe is the norm....?

My wife and I are leisurely traveling to TX. We are looking for local restaurants to dine at. Free or low cost sights to see, interests in history and shopping. tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i16274-Dallas_w…

    Camping, dining, attractions

Hi, living in the area, I have some suggestions for you. Personally, Elizabethtown doesn%26#39;t have that much to see or do. Consider going to Bardstown where you will find My Old Kentucky Home. If you don%26#39;t want to tour, you can just walk the grounds which are nice. Also, in Bardstown there are historical museums to see. There%26#39;s also the distilleries and a monestary. There is a carriage ride around town that narrates all the historical homes and places. There is a famous restaurant there located inside a very old historical building. Beautiful small town. Also, not far from there is Harrodsburg. Old Fort Harrod is there as well as nearby there is Shaker Village. Outside of Elizabethtown, about 7-9 miles south, there is a very small, quaint town called Glendale. Lots of antique shops and 2 very well known restaurants. The Depot and the most famous Whistle Stop. The town literally sits on railroad tracks...this is a park and walk town. Very relaxing. Outside of Cave City there is Mammoth Cave National Park. There are the cave tours of course but also nice trails and such. Also, not too far south of Glendale is Hodgenville where you can visit Abraham Lincolns birthplace. The grounds there are so pretty and its no cost to walk around or visit the center there. Over in Western Kentucky you will find the Land Between The Lakes area. Kentucky Lake is beautiful. The actual LBL area offers so much to do. And nothing is really expensive. We didn%26#39;t pay over $5 to do anything there. There is the prairie where you pay about $3 per car and drive a loop and witness wild buffalo and elk roaming free. The Homestead is a pioneer farm to tour, the nature center has a lot of animals, the planetarium is neat too. In Grand Rivers {the nearby town} there is the famous Patti%26#39;s Settlement. All kinds of neat shops and such. Plus the famous Patti%26#39;s restaurant. The Iron Kettle is nearby and is delicious, not as expensive. Very small town. www.lbl.org and www.pattis-settlement.com will give you some good info on the area. We went camping there for a week, saw everything there was to see, ate out twice and we spent less than $350. I hope this helps! Any questions, feel free to ask!

I have narrowed it down to Hampton Inn or Courtyard Marriott both at the downtown location. There are mixed reviews about the Hampton some say it the best and others say it is really really noisy and close to the hospital, not the safest area? and the Courtyard is ranked 35 with good reviews so Im not sure why its so low in the ranking?? Is it in a bad location? Any other opinios, the good and the bad, about these two hotels would be great. THank you.

Hampton Inn or Courtyard by Marriott ~downtown locations

I%26#39;ve never stayed in either, but I think the Courtyard is in a better location.

Hampton Inn or Courtyard by Marriott ~downtown locations

If there is not much difference in the price you have been quoted, I would definitely select the Courtyard by Marriott downtown. It is at the corner of 2nd St %26amp; Main St. The location is about is about 6 blocks from the Louisville Slugger Bat Museum. The hotel is a short walk from the waterfront and also 4th St Live. There is an Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant one block south and one block west of the hotel which is nice and reasonably priced. I have not stayed at this hotel, I am just very familiar with the area. The Hampton Inn is probably OK, but the location is not nearly as good. As noted previously, if the price is not much different I would pick the Courtyard by Marriott.

Definitely the Courtyard. The area around the hospitals are not the greatest as far as traffic, noise, and safety.

Also the Courtyard is fairly new. It has a great location, close to many things, and I think it%26#39;s on the trolley line.

The Courtyard is on the trolley line as well. The Hampton is actually closer to downtown...I played piano there for 4 years when it was the Rodeway Inn. Refurbished, but not as new or nice as Marriott. It is right by Primo, one of Louisville%26#39;s finest restaurants. A little bit down on Market, still on trolley line is Melillo%26#39;s....a wonderful family run Italian restaurant. Spaghetti factory is a chain and the food can%26#39;t hold a candle to homemade meatballs, sauce etc like Melillo%26#39;s!!! Price is good, too.

Hey everyone. My fianc茅 and I are looking to stay in Louisville for Valentines Day weekend, from the 15th-17th. We have been looking at various hotel reservation websites and alot of the motels in Louisville are expensive. We are looking to spend less than $65 a night if possible. The cheapest I found was $40 a night and it was one of the Suburban Extended Stay hotels and I heard that it was horrible! Any recommendations?

Need Cheap Motel for Valentines Day Weekend!

well, I%26#39;d like to say that you get what you pay for. Have you tried bidding at priceline? If not, why not? It%26#39;s the only way to get a decent hotel at that price. The Farm Machinery show should be over by then and I suspect you can get the Galt House for 65. For your budget, you might look at the Red Roof Inn off Hurstbourne and i-64 or the Microtel out off Blankenbaker.

    Mammoth caves

I am having trouble with locating things to do in and around Mammoth Caves. We have two girls 9 and 5. What things can you suggest to do%26gt; We are traveling from Ohio and would spend 2 days exploring the caves but need some others things to do also. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Holly

    Mammoth caves

    Hi Holly,

When are you coming to the area? The time of year will impact what you can do. There are some privately owned caverns in the area (Diamond is a nice one), but if you will be in the area in colder weather, you will be more limited.

If you are touring in warmer weather, I%26#39;d recommend Kentucky Down Under, which is an Australian themed zoo that also has an onyx cave. It%26#39;s located in Horse Cave. The kids will enjoy it, as they will learn to throw a boomerang, pet kangaroos, see many types of animals and play a diggiridoo. The cave is open year-round, but the zoo is not. Also in nearby Bowling Green is Beech Bend Park, a small amusement park that has a pretty wide variety of rides, including the Kentucky Rumbler, an excellent wooden roller coaster. There is also a large water park and mini golf. It%26#39;s very clean and reasonably priced, but once again, seasonal. It%26#39;s about 30 mintues from the Mammoth area.

There is a cave museum also in Horse Cave that is open year-round, and there was a dinosaur attraction in Cave City. We didn%26#39;t take time to see it, as it looked more for the younger set. Our daughter is almost 10.

The Corvette Plant/Museum is in Bowling Green, but I%26#39;m not sure if your kids would find this interesting.

    Hope this helps some.

    Mammoth caves

We did this same type trip three summers ago. Our kids were 9, 6, and 3. We stayed in Cave Springs Farm B%26amp;B. It was loads of fun, with farm animals, etc. and a private tour of Cave Springs Cave.

We spent one afternoon at Mammoth Cave. Be sure to pack a jacket/sweatshirt as it is a constant mid-50s underground. You also should make reservations depending on the time of year you are coming. Tours can sell out in advance.

We went into Cave City and played putt-putt at a pathetic little place, but we had so much fun that night. We were using our putters as pool cues and hitting our balls that way. There was an ice cream shop in the complex and we got big cones after.

The next day we took the sky-lift to the top of Guntown Mountain. We went in the buildings, watched a cheesy shoot-out, got old-fashioned pictures made, had rootbeer floats...It was old-fashioned fun like I remembered from when I was a kid. Very laid back.

That lasted until early afternoon. We had lunch and then headed over to KY Down Under. It was really cool there. My kids had a blast with all of the hands on activities, petting kangaroos, bottle feeding lambs, etc. It was a great time, and we wished we would have gone there first.

We headed back to Louisville after two and a half days feeling like we%26#39;d been gone a week!

We started to check out Dinosaur World, but it looked a little too fakey even for us!

Wow, thank you. I think the KY down under sounds good. We enjoy going to different zoos. We probably come down in May or June. It would be a last minute kind of trip. Something close by also fun. Thanks for your help.

  • Need modest hotel or B&B downtown

I%26#39;m having trouble finding one room for one night (2/13-14) in downtown Louisville area, was hoping around $80-100 but willing to go a bit higher if necessary. Need modest hotel or B%26amp;B downtown

Have you tried Priceline? I%26#39;ve used it with great success for downtown Louisville. Generally, if you plug in three stars for the downtown area, you will wind up with the Hyatt, the Galt House, or the Marriott, all of which are in good locations and have been recently updated.

I meant to add that I%26#39;ve used it even when the hotel websites show that they are sold out and I%26#39;ve still gotten a room. Might be worth a try!

Yes, Renald. It%26#39;s Valentine%26#39;s time and it%26#39;s the Farm Machinery Show...one of Louisville%26#39;s biggest conventions. You will be lucky to get a room in a hotel. but suggest you start looking at B%26amp;Bs as they probably won%26#39;t house conventioneers. There are also a couple across the river in Jeffersonville, IN.

You might want to try Market Street Inn, it is just over the river from downtown (literally). Since it is technically Indiana, not many people realize it is there when other Louisville accommodations are sold out. The website is: http://www.innonmarket.com/

There are other B%26amp;Bs in Old Louisville, but they might be too far from downtown depending on where you need to be.

After contacting a couple of the mentioned B%26amp;Bs, I tried Priceline, bidding $ 70.00 which was accepted by a 4-star hotel downtown!

Thank you all for your helpful and useful suggestions! Is this a great site or what!

Executive Inn of Owensboro is a joke!

My stay at the Executive Inn of Owensboro KY was atrociuos! To been a so called luxury hotel, it was more like a motel 6. The food was awful as well at the accomodations. I wrote 4 comment cards, spoke to three different people at the front desk as well as emailed the management. I received no response...not even I%26#39;m sorry. I would never recommend waisting your money to stay at the Executive Inn. The rooms ar outdated, dirty and the AC didn%26#39;t even work. The prime rib buffet was a joke. I%26#39;ve had a better salad bar at pizza hut. The boiled egg were actually frozen. The big buffet they advertised consisted of prime rib (all fat and a steak knife wouldn%26#39;t even cut it), scalloped potatoes, beans and a salad bar with maybe 5 toppings. The room smelled, carpet filthy, bedspread worn and stained. The front desk help was NO help. When I complained their comment was ';well, no one else had complained!'; While staying there many of the guest I spoke with were just as disappointed as I was. Don%26#39;t waist your money or time at the Executive Inn of Owensboro, KY

Executive Inn of Owensboro is a joke!

Waste you mean. I have heard really bad comments about how this property has gone downhill. Used to be a great concert spot, etc, but no longer. Sorry about your bad experience and thanks for the comments.

Executive Inn of Owensboro is a joke!

I thought they had gotten new management, redecorated and improved, but your experience sounds like ours 3 years ago! They actually gave us a key to a room that was already occupied - and when we tried to get in, there was a chain on the door and a lady told us nicely that we were the 3rd people who had been given keys to her room!! Since they couldn%26#39;t find another room for us (and we%26#39;d had the reservations for over 6 months) they put us in a suite. The explanation of your room definitely fit that so-called suite!! Really sad for a place that used to be so nice. :(

I am planning a visit to Kentucky Horse Park at the end of May. What is a good hotel that is fairly close to the Horse Park? Thanks for your responses. Janet in NC

    Close hotel to Horse Park

Embassy Suites, Marriott Resort at Griffin Gate, and the Holiday Inn North are all right there.

    Close hotel to Horse Park

Thanks! I%26#39;ll take a look at each one. Janet

    Take care!

Thanks captnemo - It was definitely one of the roughest weather nights I%26#39;ve ever been through, but thankfully only barn roofs with damage on our farm. Neighbors in mobile home spent the night in our basement.

Your neighbors are lucky to have you to help give them shelter cjnky. Our thoughts %26amp; prayers go out to all of our southern neighbors as well. Let%26#39;s hope the floods are not too bad.

    Where in Kentucky???

My husband and I want to celebrate our anniversary in February. We are both in our late twenties and can%26#39;t decide where to go. We can only take stay one night (Saturday) so we are planning something within two hours from Lexington. Originally we thought about Gatlinburg, however we go there every year. I%26#39;m wanting something that is mountainy. I%26#39;ve been tossing around a few ideas in my head and wonder what advice anyone has to offer? We have been thinking of ...

    1. Perfect North Slopes

    2. A Kentucky state park...one in the hills or mountains.

Any places or other suggestions, someone can think of??

    Thanks!

    Where in Kentucky???

Have you considered French Lick, Indiana? There%26#39;s the French Lick Hotel (with new casino) or the newly restored West Baden Hotel and Paoli Peaks Ski Slopes are nearby. It%26#39;s about 2 and a half hours from Lex.

    http://www.frenchlick.com/default_.asp

    http://www.paolipeaks.com/

You might also investigate General Butler State Park in Carrollton, KY. http://parks.ky.gov/findparks/resortparks/gb/

The Belterra Casino is also only a few miles from Gen. Butler State Park.

    http://www.belterracasino.com/home.aspx

    Where in Kentucky???

    Hi,

I would consider a night in Covington, Kentucky. It is across the river from downtown Cincinnati. Covington has some very nice restaurants: Dee Felice (Cajun), Pho Nam (Vietnamese), Riverside Korean, Waterfront (Steak), etc. As for hotels, the Marriott and Embassy Suites are right on the river and offer beautiful views (get a riverview room). Both hotels will charge for parking. You can also do a river cruise on B%26amp;B Riverboats, which is right between the Marriott and Embassy Suites.

    Happy Anniversary!

I don%26#39;t know if you ever been to Perfect North, but that%26#39;s mostly a lot of ski trails on a hill. I%26#39;m pretty sure there%26#39;s no lodge there. If you want to stay overnight, you%26#39;d have to go into Lawrenceburg (only about five to ten minutes away, but definately not in the mountains). There%26#39;s a Holiday Inn Express there, or you can stay at the Argosy Casino hotel.

Sounds like you might enjoy the Pine Mountain State Park Lodge. Depending on how you drive, it%26#39;s slightly over two hours. It%26#39;s just off the Cumberland Gap Pkwy (US 25-E) about 35 miles from Corbin.

I might also suggest Covington or some place in Northern KY. You%26#39;re close to Cincinnati (for all the venues it offers), you%26#39;re close to the Argosy Casino in Indiana if that%26#39;s your thing, and Covington itself houses Mainstrasse which has MANY cool restaurants, bars, and shops. The hotels along the river offer great views of Cincinnati as well.

Definitely something in the Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge area. There is a state park, there, but I%26#39;d go for one of the private cabin rentals. I%26#39;ve had good success with the Scenic Cabins company.

    Happy anniversary!

Galt House, Hampton Inn or Residence Inn Downtown?

My family and I have decided to plan a long weekend getaway to Louisville. We%26#39;re planning to play tourist and hit the local downtown museums and sights this February. We%26#39;re looking for a suite - separate bedroom and living area since we%26#39;re traveling with the youngster and us oldsters might want to stay up later. How is the Galt House? I%26#39;m a bit worried by some of the reviews on Tripadvisor - so I have made a couple of backup reservations. However, it looks like those hotels may not be within walking distances to Slugger Museum, 4th Street Live, etc. Any advice from the local experts would be appreciated. TIA!

Galt House, Hampton Inn or Residence Inn Downtown?

I prefer the Residence Inn. A few months ago a couple friends and I stayed here for a night thanks to a great deal from Marriott e-breaks. It was a very pleasant stay. Enjoy!

Galt House, Hampton Inn or Residence Inn Downtown?

Rhe Hampton and Residence Inn are on the downtown trolley route which you can take all over the city.

Thanks everyone for your help! We%26#39;re looking forward to using the trolley. Does it run in the evenings on the weekend? What about Sunday?

    www.ridetarc.org/searchbyroute.asp…

There%26#39;s the schedule and route. A truly wonderful way to get around. Every first Friday of the month, there%26#39;s a ';trolley hop'; which goes to the galleries, restaurants and stores. It%26#39;s a blast!

  • many questions 1st family vacation to Louisville

Iam planning a family trip to Louisville in the summer (june sometime) for about 6 adults and a toddler. We want to stay 3-4days, We have never been to Louisville and was wondering what are the must sees and must dos while we are there? We plan on going to the slugger and derby museums. We will defiently checkout churchill downs and then try to go to the zoo and amusement park. Maybe to much for only 3-4 days?

My questions is where can I find a ';package deal'; something that would include hotel and tickets to maybe one or two of the atttractions we will visit??

Any good suggestions on what hotels to look at. Nothing real fancy since we will have a 3 yr old witth us :)

    Thanks

Any other input would be greatly appreciated :)

many questions 1st family vacation to Louisville

Hi there! Many of us have published ';go lists'; here on tripadvisor, so take a look there. I think your 3 yr old is a bit young for KY Kingdom....too few rides and too many $$$. The toddler would enjoy more splashing in the fountains down on the Great Lawn by the river and the huge playground. Take a luncheon cruise either Sat or Sun on the Belle of Louisville Steamboat. There are many festivities which go on all summer on the downtown Belvedere and river front, so check out the city%26#39;s website. I don%26#39;t know any hotels with packages, though I%26#39;ve seen discount coupons at several area places. You might look at the Entertainment book. I think a good hotel for you would be the Galt House by the river. It has a pool and is on the downtown trolley line. When my daughter was 3, she LOVED the trolley!

many questions 1st family vacation to Louisville

Across from the Slugger Museum is the Louisville Science Center. My kids loved the Kidzone there when they were little. Our science center is a bit lame compared to Indy%26#39;s or Cincy%26#39;s, but my kids loved it just the same.

Also, a nice, nice place to go is the Speed Art Museum. The basement has a place called Art Sparks where your little one could pass HOURS of time while the adults switch off and tour the museum.

We also loved, loved, loved the Falls of the Ohio Museum in Clarksville. It%26#39;s a really neat place to learn about the geology of the area and see the largest exposed fossils in the world. My kids, especially my son when he was young, really liked looking at the fossils down by the river.

I second the idea of going to the playgrounds by the river. The one in Phase 2 near Tumbleweed restaurant, is our very favorite. My kids could spend HOURS there too.

We have a nice zoo here and there%26#39;s Six Flags too, but whenever we travel, we rarely go to the local zoo or amusement park since we can do that here.

As far as hotels go, what is your budget? The Galt House is nice and right downtown, but there are others on the outside of town that might work just as well.

Search our tourism website www.gotolouisville.com to see about any package deals or discount tickets.

    Welcome!

Thanks for all the great info. I have been looking at hotles in the downtown area but not sure yet what hotel is centrally located and reasonably priced?? The ones that have caught me eye are the Hyatt, Galt maybe LaQuinta Residence Inn?

My next question, is it better/convient to stay downtown? Or would you recommend getting a hotel away from the downtown area and just going there during the day?

I would like to stay around 150.00 or less per night

    Thank you again

I%26#39;d also recommend the Falls of the Ohio http://www.fallsoftheohio.org/

    Our young kids loved it.

We also did Marengo Cave the same day.

    http://www.marengocave.com/

It%26#39;s a half hour or so drive from Louisville. Our kids also liked the cave.

We%26#39;ve always stayed in the downtown area of wherever we are except for Minneapolis. Since much of what you want to do is in or near downtown, I%26#39;d probably opt to stay there.

My choice would be the Galt House. It%26#39;s just a neat hotel right on the river. It%26#39;s close to everything, is on the trolley line, and is a local landmark.

The Hyatt is nice too. Neat indoor elevator that I always loved as a kid. Right near Fourth Street Live as well.

I don%26#39;t know about the LaQuinta.

I think, I%26#39;d pick the Galt House.

Another fun 1/2 day trip is to Squire Boone Caverns abut 45 minutes west of Louisville in southern Indiana.

The thing my kids like best about it is for around $5, you get a bucket of mud that you can sluice and find cool rocks, pyrite, and crystals. You can also make a candle, take a cave tour, and see the petting zoo. It%26#39;s kinda hokey, but my kids always have a ball there.

    Hi wplank

The previous postings have all offered some good ideas. Since you are coming in June, if you like baseball you might check to see if the Louisville Bats (Reds AAA affiliate) are in town. Slugger Field is on the waterfront and is a great place to watch a game. It is by the Waterfront Park area. As for places to stay, in addition to those mentioned in the downtown area, there is a new Fairfield Inn and Springhill Suites by Marriott that will be open in May that may be worth a look. The two are joined and are located at 1st and Jefferson St. I don%26#39;t know if they are taking reservations yet, but you might check the Marriott site. Also, the Hampton Inn downtown is within 5-6 blocks of many of the downtown sites. Outside of downtown, you might consider the Hilton Garden Inn on Crittenden Dr. I don%26#39;t know if they offer any type of shuttle or packages, but they are a couple of minutes from Kentucky Kingdom and Churchill Downs and less than a ten minute drive to downtown. Also if there are any particular motel chains you favor, look for their location on Phillips Ln and you will probably find one. That area is two minutes from Ky Kingdom and may offer packages also.

    Tom

    wplank:

Look for discount coupons to the Louisville Slugger Museum. We got $1 off coupons at a coupon display in a hotel lobby. You may also be able to get them at one of the Kentucky Welcome Centers at a freeway rest stop.

Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $4 for kids, and free for 5 years old and under.

    Hours:

    Mon-Sat 9-5

Sundays (April - November) noon - 5 (No bat production on Sundays though)

Bat production schedule varies and they don%26#39;t guarantee that the production line will be running while you%26#39;re there, however you%26#39;d still get a tour.

I am also planning a family vacation to Louisville this summer, but later in the first of August. You had lots of the same questions that I had. I%26#39;m taking my mother who is 74, but in very good physical condition, and my niece who will just have graduated college, and nephew, who will just have completed the bar exam. My mother and nephew will be looking for historical sites. Any suggestions? For my niece, we%26#39;ll be going to a Cin. Reds game. Thanks for the hotel tips that were posted. Does anyone have any tips on things that will make 3 generations happy? Thanks.

For historical sites, try Locust Grove, an historic home that was owned by the sister of George Rogers Clark and William Clark (of Lewis and Clark). There is also Farmington, owned by Joshua Speed, who was a dear friend of Abraham Lincoln, and The Farnsley-Moremen Landing.

A walking tour of Old Louisville, with its Victorian homes, is fabulous. Take a tour of the Conrad-Caldwell house.

You can also see the Thomas Edison House where he lived while he was in Louisville.

I still recommend a trip to the Falls of the Ohio Museum and the J.B. Speed Art Museum.

The Frazier Historical Arms Museum is one of my favorites. I love the first person interpretations of many historical figures, and the sword-fighting demonstration is out of this world.

    I hope that helps!

kyderbymom, thanks for the info! It does help, because I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve seen anything in travel guides about the sword fighting demonstration! Thanks again.

  • Need advice on one day trip

Possibly planning either a one day trip or two day trip into this area. Haven%26#39;t been there since I was a child. Could someone give me some ideas on visiting and some ideas on nice places to stay. Has to be reasonable and definitely clean!!!!! Great if it had an indoor pool.

Need advice on one day trip

In Danville (10 miles south) there is a Hampton Inn. I haven%26#39;t been to this location but I%26#39;ve been to many others. They almost always have an indoor pool (you can call to check), are very clean, have nice furniture and bedding, and free breakfast. Only one I%26#39;ve been to without an indoor pool was in Pueblo Colorado. The one in Pigeon forge has both an indoor and an outdoor pool! Overall Hampton Inns are my first choice. Fairfield Inns (none in the area)would be second and Comfort Suites third (one in Danville with an indoor pool). They%26#39;re all nice.

Need advice on one day trip

My husband is from Harrodsburg and we are there often. Not a whole lot to see and do...but for a overnight, have you considered Shaker Village?

    http://www.shakervillageky.org/

That is a very cool place and the food/dining experience is great. I think that beats some chain hotel that you can find anywhere. Another wonderful place is the historic Beaumont Inn:

    http://www.beaumontinn.com/

I know there are a handful of events and festivals during the summer. Probably the most popular is the ';World%26#39;s Largest Yard Sale'; along 127 that stretches hundreds of miles. There%26#39;s also an antique road sale the weekend after Mothers Day.

Ft Harrod is a reproduction of the old fort, but not authentic. There%26#39;s a small museum there and some interesting Civil War displays. You can take a walking/driving tour of the old mansions in town. Herrington Lake is close, it%26#39;s a great place for sports activities.

I would reccommend the Comfort Suites in Danville. I just recently went there and the management has turned over. I was told by the young man that they are starting to renovate the property now. New bedding, carpet, curtains and a more items to their hot breakfast (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links). I can%26#39;t wait to go back and see all the upgrades to this already beautiful property!

    3 generation family vacation

I%26#39;m planning a family vacation to Louisville in the first of August. My mother, who is 74 but in pretty good physical shape, and my nephew, who will have just passed the bar exam, will be looking for historical sights. My niece, who will have just graduated from college and who is one of NC%26#39;s premier collegiate softball pitchers, will of course want to visit the Louisville Slugger museum. (We will also be doing a day trip to see the Reds.) Do you have any suggestions for things to see and do that would please 3 generations? Thanks!

    3 generation family vacation

-Take a ride on the Belle of Louisville.

-Take in a game at Slugger Field (Louisville Bats, Cincy%26#39;s farm team).

    -Ky. Derby Museum.

    -Frazier History Museum.

    -Muhammad Ali Center

-Distillery tour, if you can drive about an hour. Woodford Reserve Distillery recommended. Maker%26#39;s Mark also recommended, but about 1.5 hour drive.

    3 generation family vacation

Thank you! I have looked at the distilleries and didn%26#39;t know which one would be the best. The Frazier looks good, too. Thanks again.

    Louisville to Cincinnati Reds

we%26#39;re going to take a day trip from Louisville to see the Cincinnati Reds in August. Any ideas for stops along the way? (4 adults, 3 generations)

    Louisville to Cincinnati Reds

Is it a day game or a night game? (That would have some bearing on what to suggest).

The only tourist attraction right on I-71 would be the Kentucky Speedway, and I%26#39;m not sure there would be anything worthwhile there (other than on race days...and I hope you won%26#39;t be going on a race day, because traffic on I-71 would be very heavy). Belterra Casino is several miles off I-71 (just acress the river in Indiana). It might be a good idea for a stop.

I can think of a few shopping destinations along the way, if you like to shop. There is an outlet mall in Carrollton, about halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati. There is a flea market in Richwood (once you get to I-75. And there is an antique market in Florence (that%26#39;s only about 15 minutes from Cincinnat).

There are a number of attractions once you rieach the Ohio River. On the Kentucky side of the river, we have the Newport Aquarium and Newport-On-The-Levee. The Ohio side of the river has the several museums (the Art Museum, Taft Museum, Underground Railroad Freedom Center).

    Louisville to Cincinnati Reds

Thanks for the help. I%26#39;ll check and make sure our tickets are not for a race day. You%26#39;ve given us lots of choices, Thanks!

Road trip: St Louis to Louisville to Fredericksburg VA

My best friend and I are driving back to NJ from St. Louis. we decided instead of the boring route, we would stop in Louisville to visit someone then stop in Fredericksburg to see my sons new house. If anyone has made any portion of this trip and could offer advise please do. We do not plan on driving more than 4 - 5 hours at a stretch.

We are up for the adventure but want to be

prepared. Any ideas on where to stop.... We will spend the nite in Louisville before strting off again. It appears we would be stopping in West Virginia somewhere ovrrnight.

Any interesting places too or eateries. I am only just now researching the trip.

    Thanks a lot!

Road trip: St Louis to Louisville to Fredericksburg VA

Since you%26#39;ll be in Louisville one evening only, I would suggest you take in one of our excellent locally owned restaurants.

How about one of these: Jack Fry%26#39;s (Bardstown Rd., Southern Cuisine), Seviche (Bardstown Rd., Latin), Primo (East Market St., Italian), Sapporo (Bardstown Rd., Sushi or Hibachi), Havana Rumba (Oechsle Ave., Cuban) to name a few of my favorites.

Here is a great website of reviews of many of Louisville%26#39;s restaurants. Be aware that some are chains. So, be sure to pick one that is locally owned and operated for a true Louisville experience.

Road trip: St Louis to Louisville to Fredericksburg VA

amen, oakae, amen. I just don%26#39;t see why people flock to the Spaghetti Factory. Yuck!

There%26#39;s absolutely nothing between Lexington and Charleston. I think that region is one of the last in the US to still have analog cell service.

If you get car sick easily, be prepared for the ride between Charlestown and Beckley. Many turns and narrow lanes with not many places to stop and rest. It%26#39;s a toll road too. The new river gorge is worth seeing if you dont mind making a little detour.

  • Southgate House Parking on a Saturday night

I%26#39;m going to a concert at SGH in a few weeks. It%26#39;s on a Saturday night. It occurred to me that I haven%26#39;t been to a show there since the mid-1990s, before NOTL et al went in, and finding parking might be much more challenging than it used to be. Anybody have any tips? Would prefer not to pay, but I recognize that might no longer be possible, especially on a weekend evening.

Southgate House Parking on a Saturday night

It would be tough if you don%26#39;t know the area and its side streets very well. You might just have to bite the bullet and park at the levee or in one of the surface lots. I think the levee parking structure is like $5 on the weekends.

Southgate House Parking on a Saturday night

In the future you might ask the clerk at the Travel lodge. They have let us park there before for free.

    Louisville Hotels

I%26#39;m looking for for a hotel for the Memorial Day weekend. What hotel areas would be in a safe neighborhood? Will likely be going down to waterfront park, but a 10 mile drive to the park would be ok. Thanks.

    Louisville Hotels

Safety isn%26#39;t really an issue when choosing a hotel. There are the airport hotels located off the interstate which offer no frills, basic stays and shuttle service to airport, etc. Those are okay, but tend to be a bit noisy and there are few restaurants or other places of interest around there. There are many hotels in the I-64 /Hurstbourne Lane area, While there are nearby shopping malls and a plethora of chain restaurants and stores, the traffic is horrible just about any time of the day. Therefore, for visitors wanting to see the downtown sights, I recommend a downtown hotel such as the Mariott, Hyatt, Galt House or one of the historical hotels, Seelbach and Brown. We also have many wonderful B%26amp;Bs in the old Louisville area which are convenient to downtown. There is a decent Ramada Inn off Zorn Ave by the river and I-71 where we occasionally send clients. Some of the rooms are a bit dated, but it%26#39;s not a bad place. If you can use Priceline to bid for a downtowmn hotel, you may be very happy with the results. Often people bid 4 star and get the Hyatt or Galt House for 70 dollars or less.

    Louisville Hotels

Stick to one of the hotels on the waterfront or out on Hurtsbourne Lane. Dont stay at the Holiday Inn on Broadway Ave (just outside of downtown), any of the hotels in southern indiana, or out by the airport. I lived right off Hurtsbourne for 3 years and traffic is not all that bad if you%26#39;re not going very far from the interstate.

Planning trip with 3 & 5 yr olds

My husband %26amp; I are planning a trip to KY this summer with our 2 young kids. Where in Kentucky should we stay???

We will be camping while we%26#39;re there (we have a 5th wheel trailer), and would like to visit some ';family-friendly'; area attractions, maybe a cave, possible horseback riding, beaches.

    We appreciate any suggestions!

Planning trip with 3 %26amp; 5 yr olds

With your priorities, I%26#39;d recommend the Mammoth Cave Area, or the Land Between the lakes area. The latter won%26#39;t have a cave, but would have lots of other family-friendly activities plus beaches. You can check out more about it at http://www.lbl.org/

Planning trip with 3 %26amp; 5 yr olds

Forgot to mention - NUMEROUS places to camp in LBL area - 3 state parks - Kenlake, Kentucky Lake SP, and Lake Barkley SP. Lots and LOTS of primitive spots between the lakes besides 3 with hook-ups.

Check out the KY state parks online at parks.ky.gov/.

We really liked Carter Caves on the east-side of the state. There are several small and accessible caves, some easy hikes, canoeing and a pool. I can%26#39;t remember if there were horses.

Also if you have horse fans, plan to stop at Kentucky Horse Park for at least half a day.

    Lexington Adult Clubs

I’m driving up to the Spearmint Rhino in Lexington this weekend to see a friend that is feature dancing at the club. Can anyone give me a heads up on this club?

How about any other clubs in Lexington, any opinions on where the hottest lady’s can be found?

    Lexington Adult Clubs

Well...that would be ladies, with no apostrophe. Lady%26#39;s would indicate that she owned someting. Lady%26#39;s coat, lady%26#39;s opinion, lady%26#39;s esteem, etc. Of course, I%26#39;m giving you a third grader%26#39;s English lesson here. I have no doubt you are searching for ladies with little education or intelligence, just like yourself. Have a great trip and be sure to use protection.

    Lexington Adult Clubs

There is also Solid Platinum gentleman%26#39;s club. It%26#39;s not as nice as Rhino but can be alot of fun. Both clubs have hot ladies. But I haven%26#39;t been to Platinum in awhile and I think most of their better dancers have moved to Rhino. There a few other clubs in town but I wouldn%26#39;t recommend any of them. Stick to Rhino %26amp; Platinum. Have fun.

Need summer wkend lake getaway w/in 3 hrs of Louisville

Help, we are looking for a really nice place on a lake to hang out with another family during the summer. Four teenagers and two sets of parents looking for a two night get-away to swim, make campfires, stay in really nice condo or townhouse (willing to pay $150ish a night) to get a great weekend together before our oldest go off to college.

Want a couple of restaurants, but to be able to make a few meals in the kitchen. Boating is fine, but a good place to hang out in nice surroundings and nice accomodations. Any ideas? Gatlinburg is too far for this trip.

    Thanks.

Have you considered renting a houseboat? I%26#39;m taking my senior and other child on a houseboat trip to France, lol, but we did that once on KY Lake and it was a blast!

Need summer wkend lake getaway w/in 3 hrs of Louisville

i too would recommend a houseboat ... burnside marina has the best rates of any houseboat company on lake cumberland ... i don%26#39;t think you are going to be able to find anything that large to accomodate everybody for $150 per night ......

    Perfect, looks great. Thanks.

There are some really great, affordable floating cabins at Green River Marina. We loved it there and thought the price was really good.

  • Flea Markets

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me if there is any flea markets in the Lexington area?

    Thanks

    Flea Markets

I don%26#39;t know of any in Lexington but there is an indoor flea market in Versailles. It%26#39;s about 10 miles from Lexington.

There are several antique markets though. One is on Manchester St. It is open one weekend a month. I%26#39;ll try to find the schedule. There is also an antique market in Meadowthorpe shopping center.

    Flea Markets

How far from Lexington are you looking at.

The Richwood Flea Market is about an hour north of Lexington, and about 20 minutes south of Cincinnati.

Hi, about 20 minutes east of Lexington is Winchester, they have a peddlers mall which is the same thing as a fleamarket except you take each item you want to purchase to one centrail cash register. Then if you want to drive about 30 minutes South of lexington you will be in richmond, they have a peddlers mall and a Fleamarket.

In Georgetown (About 20 minutes from lex) There is another fleamarket that is pretty good, and lastly in Shelbyville there is a HUGE fleamarket, it is between frankfort and Louisville! The best time to go is during the spring/summer so that outside vendors will be there!

    Hope this helps!
