Youth Activities within walking distance of Fair & Expo Cent

My daughter, 10, and I will be staying at the La Quinta Inn to attend a convention at the Kentucky Fair %26amp; Expo Center next week, October 25th to 30th. We are riding to the center with a teammate. Are there enough activities close to the center to walk to or should I plan on renting a car when I get to Louisville? We do a lot of hiking so 3 to 5 miles could be walking distance. How safe and reliable is the public transportation system? Can any suggest some activities? She enjoys animals, science and, especially, rocks. I like quilting %26amp; crafts. Thanks in advance!

Hello. The La Quinta is a nice place to stay. However, the entire area is for the airport and conventions, period. There are no decent restaurants within walking distance. You are also situated by 2 major interstates and the very busy Preston Highway (not a great area). Driving around here is not difficult. If your daughter loves rocks, bu all means take her to the Falls of the Ohio across the river. Interesting fossil beds and a nice visitor center with a good movie about the formation of the beds. We also have an excellent zoo. There%26#39;s a Six Flags park next to the Convention Center. We have a long path along the river front where you can hike or bike. We also have beautiful Seneca and Cherokee Parks with lovely footpaths and plenty of parking. Please look at my golist for Louisville, I have several links there about the aforementioned places. Have a lovely time.

The area around the Fairgrounds and your hotel doesn%26#39;t really lend itself well to walking around, sightseeing, window shopping, hiking, etc. It%26#39;s kind of industrial.

Our bus system (TARC) is limited to main routes into and out of downtown.

I suggest a car rental and the following activities:

Louisville Science center

We have a pretty nice zoo

A ride on the Belle would be nice. Looks like Oct. 26 is the last day for cruising.

The Falls of the Ohio would be great for anybody interested in rocks, fossils, etc.

You might even enjoy a day at the races at Churchill Downs if your daughter likes horses.

For you, maybe a visit to the Ky. Museum of Art %26amp; Craft. They are actually having an exhibit on quilts right now. This appears to be ending on Oct. 26. So, don%26#39;t miss it.

So, how%26#39;d I do?
