This is my first trip overseas-travelling for 6-7 weeks around US. I am thinking of getting some travellers cheques before I go.
Generally, does it cost me to ';cash them';
Are they widely used?
Are they accepted in most places (resturants, hotels shops etc)
Or am I better off getting one of those travel cash cards.
I am a bit confused as to what the best thing is to do.
Thank you to everyone in advance
Travellers cheques
they aren%26#39;t widely used, but anywhere that accepts credit cards (almost everywhere) should honor your travelers checks with no problem. you don%26#39;thave to pay to spend them, though you may have to pay to get them.
Travellers cheques
Although traveller%26#39;s cheques are supposed to be accepted just like cash, I%26#39;m guessing that you will run into instances where they won%26#39;t be.
If it were me, I would put all the money I need in my Australian bank account and then access my cash when I need it with a debit card.
This way you don%26#39;t have to carry a bunch of money around on you. Automated Teller Machines (ATM%26#39;s) are available everywhere (on every block and in most convenience stores) in the U.S.
And as long as your debit card has a VISA or MasterCard logo, it can also be used anywhere just like a credit card (restaurants, shopping, gas stations etc.)
Double check with your bank to make sure that the card will work in the U.S. Also make sure that they know you are travelling abroad so that they don%26#39;t mistakenly put a block on your card when they notice the unual purchasing activity. Also make sure you understand the exchange fees that your bank charges so you won%26#39;t have any surprises.
