Looking for things to do in and around KY

Hi guys,

I hope this topic hasn%26#39;t been beaten to death but I%26#39;m going to be working with a client in Louisville throughout December and January and I was wondering what there was to do in the area?

Things I%26#39;ve kinda short listed so far are:

Muhammad Ali Museum

Louisville Slugger Museum

Woodford Reserve Tour

Restaurants:

Lilly%26#39;s

Jack Fry%26#39;s

Equus

Vincenzo%26#39;s

I%26#39;m looking for more ideas. I wouldn%26#39;t mind driving 1-2 hours out of Louisville if I am around on the weekend to explore but I%26#39;m also looking for things to do after work which would be past 6pm. Last week when I was there, I basically just tried to find restaurants on Bardstowne which was great but there wasn%26#39;t much to do beyond that.

I am also into photography so if anyone has any good spots for that, that%26#39;d be appreciated too :)

Thanks!

Add the Speed Art Museum. Good way to spend a cold, rainy day or evening.

Take a drive down to Mammoth Cave for a tour. Beautiful inside the caves and it will be warmer in there than out.

If you%26#39;re here during a decent snowfall (say %26gt;3 inches) grab a sled and find Baringer Hill in Cherokee Park. Great sledding hill.

There are several more distillery tours in the area. You probably won%26#39;t want to do them all in the same day (I don%26#39;t think you could). These are from the PauperedChef.com. He does a good job of describing each tour.

Buffalo Trace %26amp; Woodford Reserve

Wild Turkey %26amp; Maker%26#39;s Mark

Jim Beam %26amp; Heaven Hill

Lexington, Kentucky has The Kentucky Horse Park and Keeneland Thoroughbred Racetrack (1.5 hours away). You could combine a Lexington trip with a visit to Shakertown (Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill I think is the proper name).

You should at least check out the Kentucky Derby Museum since you%26#39;ll be here in Louisville. Eat breakfast or lunch at Wagner%26#39;s Pharmacy which is right by the track.

Photography sites...

- Churchill Downs of course (the horses won%26#39;t be running)

- Cave Hill Cemetary (I think it closes at 5 or 6pm)

- Cherokee Park

- Drive out River Road to Goshen and beyond for horse farms (they are privately owned. Not generally open to the public. Be respectful)

- Stop by the Water Tower at the bottom of Zorn Ave. on your way out River Road.

- Bowman Field

- The Victorian mansions along Cherokee Road

- The mansions in/around St. James Court and Old Louisville

- Otter Creek area (30 miles outside the city toward Ft. Knox)

- Waverly Sanitorium (closed, but I think they do tours. It%26#39;s supposed to be highly haunted)

I%26#39;m sure there%26#39;s plenty I%26#39;ve forgotten.

My favorite restaurant on Bardstown Road is Seviche. It is always fabulous.

You could tour and take pictures at Locust Grove and Farnsley-Moorman home. Also the Falls of the Ohio or pictures from Ashland Park on the Indiana side of the ohio river.Spend a weekend day in Corydon, In about 25 min from downtown, also Caesers/Horshoe Casino.

Some very good suggestions already, I might also suggest My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, about an hour south of Louisville, while your in Bardstown you can also take in a couple of Bourbon distillery tours. Marker Mark and Heaven Hill distilleries are nearby. The town also has a wealth of antique and curio shops.

Someone also suggested Corydon IN. A nice little town. Squire Boone Caverns is nearby as is the Horseshoe Casino. Also in southern Indiana is Paoli Peaks ski area. The French Lick casino is near to Paoli, and the West Baden resort is also nearby, at one time it was the largest free standing domed building in the U.S., its still pretty impressive.

As for photography, Cave Hill Cemetery is pretty moving. The Old Louisville/St James Court area has an excellent collection of Victorian homes if thats the kind of photos your looking for. You might also try the Zoo, its not very crowded in the winter and most the animal are more active in the cooler weather, its a very nice open air style zoo.

Hope this helps
